Experience being- we also experience doing= discipleship of Christ

The writings of our text in John’s gospel and in the Epistle can seem puzzling because they do not come down on one side or the other, sort of like the question which comes first-  the chicken or the egg ?

So, which comes first, the love of God or the love of our neighbour?  Which is more important, being or doing?  Are we saved by grace or by works?

Instinctively most people come down on one side or the other and we tend to hear only those parts of the good news of Jesus Christ that seem to reinforce what is comfortable to us. 

Some people instinctively hear the message in Jesus’ first public statement of ‘good news to the poor, release to the captives, sites of the blind, freedom for the oppressed.  Luke for 4.18-19.

Indeed, this is the heart of Jesus’ ministry they argue.  Christians witness Christ as the most faithful when he is actively doing things to improve life for society.  Other people automatically see that all Jesus’ activity arises out of his times of silence and prayer.

So there this tension between being and doing, and many of us struggle with these ideas.

The problem is that today’s gospel and Epistle, like most New Testament, does not have an either-or worldview.  This means the Bible is not written with a dualistic lens.

 Instead, they argue it is always both.  Both Epistle and costs for talking about the nature of God, which we contemplate with or at which we are drawn deeply into. We see this in Jesus ministry that begins starts not as he stands up and speaks-  but as he wrestles alone in the desert.

First, St John talks about love as the fundamental nature & of God.  Out of love, God the Son comes to die so that we can draw back into the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In God, love is not an abstract quality but one we experience directly and actively.  We experience being- we also experience doing.

God acts lovingly towards us, and that is how we know that he indeed loves.  Being and doing are not separate – God is love and acts lovingly in creation. 

For us, that is not always the case because, unlike God, we are not yet complete.  We don’t always act lovingly in creation. The people to whom 1 John is addressed are presuming the people who have accepted the saving love of God.  But for most of us particularly in this western world view, Love has a beginning and a finite end.

The view of Love that God has, is embed within his own self- God is love. Its is possible to be and do at the same time. Doing comes from our sense of being- which has not a start or end- it just is.….

Look at it his way – The great aim of our life is to make the beginning and the end of love get further and further apart from us so that there is more and more room to love.  In other words, God’s love has no beginning and has no end, and nor should ours.  As the great 17th-century poet John Donne said in his Christmas sermons, God love is like a circle.  It’s endless.

Our gospel reading points out another one of God’s undeniable characteristics: life

The language 1 Johns about love can sound repetitive and soft-edged, despite the urgency and power of what’s being said.  Still, if you put 1 John alongside Johns gospel, the reason for the urgency becomes clearer. 

God is the only source of life.  If you pick flowers, they die.  If you take people away from God, they die.  It is not that this is a punishment, exactly.  It is more than it is just a fact of life.

 If people choose to live apart from God, that choice is sustained into eternity. 

Because it is sustained into eternity, God urgently invites us with the help of the Holy Spirit to live in God in Christ, each and every day that we enjoy mortal breathe.

 In choosing God, we are grafted as branches into the true vine. There we can live, and bear fruit of the exact nature as the tree. 

The choice between being and doing is a false one.  You are either alive with the life of God, the life in which there is no distinction between what God is and what God does, or you are not alive at all.

Many of us would like to rely on the life-giving love of God for ourselves without having to change too much.  In today’s story from Acts, Philip wouldn’t understand the question, ‘should I spend time being or doing- should I be praying, or should I go out and preach?

Philip has allowed himself to be directly grafted into the life of God.  so, Philip prayed, and Philip also preached.  Phil came across An African who was miles from home. This guy was reading the Bible – Hebrew Scripture- and had some questions.  Philip reacted by being and doing, at the same time and the African eunuch came to faith and was baptised. Most of us wouldn’t know such an opportunity if we part if it passed us by, not even in a golden carriage and so we miss the chance that Philip seized to work with God.  And as Philip showed people the love of God wherever he went.

And we see the love God for us in elements of bread and wine.

Filling the Well- finding peace and contentment.

The Art of Rest. 

Verse two is a beautiful picture of rest and refreshment. We find peace and refreshment when we rest in God. There were times when David was tired and weary. It is at these times he paints with the written word a lovely image of the rest that the Lord provided for him.

Like David, we can lie down in the green pastures of tranquillity and be led beside still waters of refreshment. In a place of peace and quiet, there is no trouble or turmoil. It is a place where we can just let go of the busyness of the day and enjoy an undisturbed breather. This rest space in the green pastures of tranquillity and beside still waters offers you an even flow and calmness. So, when things get too hectic; when your body needs replenishing; when the soul needs rest, come by the still waters and lie in the green pastures in God’s love. 

The Lord knows just what it takes to lead you to a peaceful place to rest in tranquillity and calmness, so let yourself be led there. You cannot help yourself or others to your full potential if you are tired and weary. Sometimes you may feel guilty when resting because of your busy schedule so you feel the need to get on with things.

As humans, we are so adapted to the hustle and bustle of life and have lost the art of rest. I know a lot of people who have retired but have not retired in their minds and heart. This is excellent, on one level, because we need a reason to get out of bed in the morning and have something to look forward to on a new day. It’s lovely to learn new things and accept new challenges that stretch us and make us grow. However, for many people, their mind is still in employment mode, so they just find it challenging to stop and cannot allow themselves to rest. 

I know a lovely couple who are in their mid-80s. They have been retired for many years. Betty says that she feels guilty when she sits down in the afternoon. She doesn’t get out of the house much because her mind and heart are still in work mode with the many chores in the house. Is it any wonder that she had a massive heart attack and now is pumped up on medications that have a lot of side effects? 

The family doctor told her that her condition is due to stress. The stress was caused by a lack of rest, putting great strain on her heart, and causing it to fail.

Then there’s Mary, a pastor’s wife who I knew many years ago. Mary had young children to run after so would get little rest. Mary was always busy, both at home and church and she never gave herself a day off or did anything that gave her pleasure. If she wasn’t working at home, or at her paid employment, she was working in the Church to support her pastor husband. Sadly Mary suffered a debilitating stroke at 34 years of age. When she received her diagnosis, it revealed that it was high-stress levels causing her blood pressure to rocket, which in turn caused the stroke. She literally wore herself out! 

Now meet Max, who after retirement wanted to take up running and other healthy pursuits. However, into his retirement, he continued to stick to a work schedule to give him a structure for his day. The schedule was 12 hours in duration- after all, he was home and could work longer hours because he didn’t waste time traveling. Max accomplished more in a day at home than she ever did in the office which had a limited working time frame. He always said that he wanted to wear out and not rust out. So, Max created for himself a tight daily schedule that exceeded the one while employed. In the end, Max was putting upon himself a heavy workload and was so busy that he could not fit in his much-wanted running program.

Then one day, Max on the spur of the moment without any preparation, decided to do a vigorous run. Max reasoned that he had to start sometime, so he geared up in running shoes and shorts, Max did not have a lot of time to spare, so without warming up, and taking things slow, he ran flat out to reach his goal. Max was found dead on the pavement. The coroner said that he had a massive heart attack due to great strain on his heart. Max didn’t take the time to ease himself into gentle exercise until his body adjusted to it. For Max, it was his first run and his last.

 I could share much more with you, but the thing is, what all these people have in common is that they abused their bodies by refusing to take rest and or relaxation. These dear folk had to get stuff done and we’re always in a hurry to achieve the end result. We need to realize and accept, and indeed enjoy that work, as well as rest, pleasure, enjoyment, and refreshment, are gifts from God. 

Jesus Christ did not come to start a new religion; he came to show us a new way of living. Religion, or our idea of religion, can drive us to the point where we can’t enjoy life anymore because we are exhausted. Jesus doesn’t drive us but leads us, and there is a big difference between the two. When one drives, they are behind pushing forward. When one leads, they walk ahead paving the way forward. When a person leads, they see the dangers ahead and clear them for you to pass, keeping you safe.

On the other hand, when you are driven, you encounter dangers head-on and suffer for it. Our Shepherd leads, rather than drives. Religion drives us, but Jesus leads us into a new way of living in a peaceful resting place.

It’s worth thinking that when we allow ourselves to be led by God, it does not mean we abrogate responsibility. 

We have a duty to nurture our own well-being. We are holistic beings, which means we are body, mind, and soul. We must learn self-nourishment on all levels. It doesn’t seem to come naturally for many of us, we need to pause and think about it.

We need to change our mindset by educating ourselves about how to consciously replenish ourselves. In so doing, we replenish our creative selves. Julia Cameron, who wrote the Artist Way, calls this filling the well, it is only you who can fill your well..

Unwrapping Psalm 23 for Your Wellness.

Understanding the Context

We need to understand that there is really nothing old about this Testament because all of it is still relevant in modernity and links beautifully with the New Testament. Without the Old Testament or correctly known as the Hebrew Scriptures, the New would be irrelevant, not least exceedingly difficult to understand.

Psalm 23 is situated in the Old Testament. During more than 40 years of ministry, many people have related to me that diving into the Old Testament is a risky and scary thing to do, so it must be avoided like the plague! They say the main reason for this is that it seems to be a lot about getting rid of people, wars, and exiles all in God’s name. When we try to weigh up a loving God with the stories of violence we find it difficult to make sense of it all, which creates many more unanswered questions and makes it easier for us to avoid the whole book. Moreover, most of us would rather shy away from all the horror of the OT to concentrate on the good news of the gospel in the NT, which is quite understandable. The problem with avoiding the Hebrew Scriptures is that it limits our understanding of the Gospels of Jesus Christ, who he is, and why he came.

Jesus of Nazareth knew, used, and quoted the Hebrew Scriptures. He understood the law and obeyed it in daily life and taught and interpreted the law in the way that God had always intended. Jesus taught nothing brand new he simply explained the law as God intended it to be implemented, with love being the focus. Jesus’ re-interpretation had nothing to do with killing but had lots to do with turning the other cheek and loving one’s enemy. It never had anything to do with selfishness but has everything to do with feeding the poor and hungry. It has nothing to do with keeping strict laws, or with an eye for an eye vengeance system. Conversely, Jesus’ re-interpretation of the law has everything to do with forgiving and loving everyone. Luke 11:2-4 (NIV) Forgive our trespasses and we forgive those who have trespassed against us. In other words. We forgive those who have hurt us. Jesus turned popular belief on its head displaying the way of love – which has always been God’s way of doing things.

If we approach the Hebrew scriptures/Old Testament at face value without applying the eight principles, the lessons will be easily misunderstood. This ancient book is full of God’s love, justice, grace, and mercy towards all, and Psalm 23 is within the OT and echoes God’s love. The OT sets the stage for God to show humanity, who he is, how he feels toward us, and the plan for saving the world. The OT heralds the coming Messiah – Jesus Christ and the NT confirms him. It is there we see the beginning of time as we know it, and the ending of time in the prophetic (foretelling) writings. The Hebrew scriptures help us to touch base with God and the New Testament helps us to know God intimately.

 Knowing Jesus is Knowing God

All the books of the Old Testament have links to the New, which demonstrates to us that knowing Jesus is knowing God. Through the birth of Christ, the cross, and the resurrection, we can enjoy a relationship with Jesus. If we are acquainted with Jesus Christ, then we are acquainted with God who is our humble Creator as well. We in fact dance with the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in celebration of the universal beauty and diversity of all creation of which you are an integral part. Jesus said, if you have seen me, you have seen the Father -John 14:9-14, also, the Father and I are One (unity) in John 10:30. Therefore, when we come into a relationship with Jesus, we also come into a relationship (unity) with God who is the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To go one step further – God lives in you! Colossians 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among all peoples the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

What is God’s Mandate for the Care of our Planet?

A lot has been said over the past 20 years or so about climate change. Initially, when the subject of climate change began to appear on our screen, few people believed it thinking it was just another way to extract money from the working person. As the years have passed, and research has progressed, the fact of climate change is slowly being accepted as a crisis of our time.

 As followers of Christ, we have a God-given responsibility toward our planet.

Genesis 1: 28 New International Version
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

We need to be aware, therefore, of the small things we can do to help heal our planet before it is too late. In order to do this, we need to be clear of the biblical plan and mandate regarding our earthy existence.

God Created the Earth

God is not just a powerful figure in the world—he is the creator of the world. He brought it into existence with all of its interconnected processes, animate and inanimate, which means that even the smallest pebble is the work of his design:

Psalms 104: 25-30
“There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small. There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.”

John 1:3
“Through him, all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made.”

Colossians 1:16-17
“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together.”

Nehemiah 9:6
“You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”

Every Living Thing Is Part of God’s Creation

The weather, plants, and animals are all part of the environment God created on the Earth. The Bible says that they are as much a part of God’s creation as mankind itself:

Isaiah 43:20-21
“The wild animals honour me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.”

Job 37:14-18
“Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God’s wonders. Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash? Do you know how the clouds hang poised; those wonders of him who is perfect in knowledge? You who swelter in your clothes when the land lies hushed under the south wind, can you join him in spreading out the skies, hard as a mirror of cast bronze?”

Matthew 6:26
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

God Uses the Earth to Teach Us

It is important, according to the Bible, to study the Earth and the environment. The Bible says that knowledge of God and his works can be found in understanding plants and animals and the delicate web of life:

Job 12:7-10
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all humankind.”

Romans 1:19-20
“…since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

Isaiah 11:9
“They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”

God Asks Us to Take Care of His Creation

In the Bible, God commands man to be a steward of the environment. Isaiah and Jeremiah prophesy about the dire consequences that occur when man disobeys God and fails to take care of the Earth:

Genesis 1:26
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and overall the creatures that move along the ground.'”

Leviticus 25:23-24
“The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants. Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.”

Ezekiel 34:2-4
“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.”

Isaiah 24:4-6
“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore, earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.”

Jeremiah 2:7
“I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable.”

Revelation 11:18
“The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great—and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

If you are a believer and follower of Christ, then you have a God-given mandate to care for the earth that feeds you and shelters you. The earth is your home. If you trash your home, eventually you will have nowhere to live- so, let’s look after this beautiful blue planet for now and for future generations.

Wellness- God and You


Like it or not, if you’re over 50, your body isn’t the same as it was when you were a 20-year-old one, so you need exercise now more than ever. I exercise daily and really feel it if I miss a day.

I exercise for 60mins each morning before I start my day. I find this sets my mind to success, health and improves my mobility. I have arthritis throughout my body now,  and moving like this first thing helps me be more active during the day. Exercise in the morning removes all stiffness from lying in bed.

As you know, and I know- you can’t do the same things, at the same pace as you once did. This, of course, is understandable and very natural. Grumbling and complaining is not the way to approach it. But embracing your age and is and finding new ways to improve your mobility is.

You may not want to hear this, but exercise is key to your independence and good quality of life as you age.

If you are a Christian, serving God will be important to you. So, if you are well, serving God is more doable. You will have more energy to help and love others in the name of Christ. Regular exercise will help to maintain your wellness.

For many people, this is no problem as they enjoy exercise. However, many others have not had the experience of incorporating exercise into their daily routine. Therefore, don’t give up hope if you are not in the habit of exercising because you can change this by developing new well-habits.

If you don’t move it- you will lose it! Our bodies were created to lift things and move. Our muscles are like rubber bands; if they are stretched, they remain healthy and flexible.

However, if they are not stretched, they can contract and shorten. Muscles that have contracted are stiff, stiff muscles are painful muscles, painful muscles that are not used become weak. Muscles are created to support your bones and keep them safe. Weak muscles cannot support bones, so the bones become vulnerable to knocks and falls. So, exercise is so essential when at any age.

The Secret

The secret to fostering the habit of exercise to improve your mobility is to find an exercise you love doing because you’re more likely to stick with something that you enjoy and look forward to doing.

You must build up your exercise steadily. If you push yourself too hard, to begin with, you can cause injury or unnecessary pain. If you hurt yourself, you will probably give on the idea of exercise, and your mobility may decline.

Get started at home with a 10min workout that you can find anywhere on YouTube for free. Or exercise with friends or groups for support and encouragement.

Put it in Your Planner.

To create the habit of exercise, plan exercise into your diary to always make time for it. If you don’t plan for it, the likelihood is that it wone get done.

Setting targets or goals will help to motivate you to get off the couch and do your 10 ins experience routine. Do you want to lose weight? Get fitter? Improve your mobility? Make a goal and ensure you move toward that. Celebrate when you reach that goal – Great Job!

Particularly if you’re over 50, For obvious reasons, it’s wise to speak to your doctor before doing any new exercise.

So, give it a go and enjoy the experience. Then, let me know how you get on with creating your exercise well- habit.

The Church and the Mindfulness question

Over the years, I have worked with many people who really struggle to make self-care a priority or do not know how to start caring for their mental health. So, I tried to find easy ways to help them on their journey. So, I began to research, which led me to the principles of mindfulness.

So I began to practice mindfulness, and in finding its great benefits, I became intensely interested in mindfulness issues around mental health. One thing that puts people off earning about themselves is that it seems far too complicated. So I searched for ways to make it easy and relatable to most people.

I escaped a very abusive marriage many years back, which caused me to be emotionally and physically ill. I developed bodily weakness and became susceptible to the flu. The abuse became a lifestyle- every day was the same. I tried to leave, but many complications prevented me.

However, finally, I did leave the relationship, which took a lot of courage. I began seriously fearing for my safety when my spouse abused me, and I was admitted to the hospital for several days. Living with this man wreaked havoc with my mind and immune system, making me feel like an old lady. Not only within my body but in my mind as well. After we separated and began to live alone. I spent over a year with women’s aid to receive weekly counseling. However, I was still working full time, and my colleagues nor my family knew the gravity of my situation.

For my continued safety and wellbeing, I moved away from my spouse to the other side of the city. On moving day, I had some help from friends, then the time came for them to return to their homes. By this time, it was by late afternoon. I was alone, but I wanted to move my microwave from one bench to another, where the accident occurred. Unfortunately, the microwave oven was cumbersome. I am a petite woman, and I barely could reach the bench height, so I decided to stand on a low table (I am only 4ft 11ins) to move the microwave from one place to another.

Lifting the oven while balancing on the table proved far too heavy for me, toppling me over. As I placed the microwave in place, down, I fell, landing with a sickening ‘thud’, on my right shoulder as I slammed into the hard kitchen floor. I was in great pain and taken to hospital by a friend I called upon. The doctor reported that I had ripped my shoulder, and two of the main tendons snapped. Unfortunately, I lost the use of my arm for over three months, and because I could no longer drive, I also took sick leave from work for that time.

During this time, my divorce went through, and living alone, I was trying to manage one-handed, which was not easy. I prayed and cried and repeated that – a lot! I knew that if I didn’t have a strategy, I feared becoming an invalid and, consequently, being forced to take early retirement.

I became so weak I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. I had physically slowed down because I lost the use of my arm and really didn’t feel well most of the time. To top it all off, I was grieving for my marriage that once held so much promise of love and happiness. However, my brain was still in work mode; it had not slowed me down, I wanted to recover and get back to my usual self as quickly as possible, so I surfed the web, bought books, studied the mind, and its working, and discovered mindfulness.

I wanted to become more self-aware, and like you, I have experienced stresses, joys, and much sorrow. I am also very dyslexic, so I shied away from anything to do with writing or public speaking as much I could. Through the years, I tried journaling but never was consistent with it. Due to my dyslexia, writing caused me GREAT anxiety. So, I routinely abandoned my efforts only after a few weeks.

Then I discovered mindfulness. I have enjoyed practicing holistic living all my life, which means caring for my mind, body, and soul in equal parts. However, I never really ventured into the mindfulness territory. I didn’t know much about it or understand what it was and why I should learn about it.

Thinking about it, I never connected mindfulness with God or my lifestyle or even the health of my mind, body, or soul. The opinions of my ministry friends did not help, warning me against it because it was of the devil. I think this idea is because of the fundamentalist doctrine that anything of the mind has its origins in evil.

This prevailing attitude caused me to write a new book, which I am currently working on. I found significant Biblical evidence to support mindfulness that I had to address the issue and share the theological view of mindfulness.

In my book, I will share what I have discovered about mindfulness within Biblical narratives. The word ‘ mindfulness’ is not found in the Bible, but the principles are. Mindfulness is a modern interpretation of the process, as ancient as creation itself.


I began practicing mindfulness and approached everything I did intentionally. I found that for me, mindfulness worked well if I made it a ‘lifestyle’ rather than as a practice where one dips in and out. Then, of course, I would forget to be mindful through practice, but become a lifestyle, and soon would become a well-habit and second nature.

To create a mindful life, I knew I must become familiar with mindfulness and learn all that I could. I came to understand that if I studied the theories of mindfulness, I would understand it, then slowly, I would become more mindful a little bit more every day.

Why Mindfulness and Christianity are Compatible 

Christianity, in many ways, has caused anxiety and fears because of the emphasis on sin and hell. Many believers have been taught that even the most minor misdemeanour requires hellfire from a small child. Therefore, to think of oneself as having a ‘worth’ escape many. 

Reformed theologians have criticized mindfulness as being a ‘religion of self’. This claim is another dangerous doctrine that takes away the preciousness of our living and puts us into fear and despair.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying there is no sin, and the wage of sin is death. That’s true; what I am saying is that the merciful goodness of God runs a lot deeper than ours.

Children are often taught about the fundamentalist belief in hell and wrongdoing to keep them in control. The idea is to scare the ‘hell’ out of them. But the result is empty religiosity because of fear and not out of a love relationship with God.

 Mindfulness is a simple way to ease our fears by stilling our minds, so we can focus on good things, as we see in Philippians 5: 16.

The fundamentalist Church teaches the cessation of self, where we can escape God’s wrath. The cure is facing ourselves and our sins and by repentance and faith being reconciled to God. 

 If we are in fellowship with God through Jesus Christ, the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, where perfect love casts out fear. The rule of God in our lives is productive of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, who is with us forever. 

St Paul declares that we have the mind of Christ because Christ was in perfect fellowship with his Father, and as we walk in the love and grace of God, we are shrouded in Gods’ loving embrace. Therefore, the Christian can rest in the Lord, filling our minds with his word of truth and applying it to our circumstances, which takes spirit, mind, and body discipline. 

As the Psalmist says, “I meditate on all that you have done, I ponder the work of your hands,” and “I will meditate on all your statutes.” Mindfulness, therefore, helps in this regard. 

St Paul declares that we have the mind of Christ because Christ was in perfect fellowship with his Father, and as we walk in the love and grace of God, we are shrouded in Gods’ loving embrace. Therefore, the Christian can rest in the Lord, filling our minds with his word of truth and applying it to our circumstances, which takes spirit, mind, and body discipline. We can become mindful as we focus upon God’s creation. Mindfulness can help us appreciate what God has put in front of us at this moment. How many times have you missed the leading of the Holy Spirit because you were not focusing on what was put in front of you? 

How many times were you distracted from what is really important? Maybe you were thinking about the next thing to do and failed to notice what God was saying to you?

 Mindfulness is a discipline of the mind, and the Bible tells us to take control of our minds. How can one allow the mind of Christ to come to the fore if your mind is undisciplined?

So many times, in Christianity, we spiritualize stuff that should be accepted on a purely practical basis. Mindfulness is an efficient practice to help you to enable the mind of Christ to dominate in your life.

 I encourage you- don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater, allow your mind to be disciplined through mindfulness, which is an easy, sure way to achieve this.

Christianity Today writes that ‘Mindfulness is our God-given, universal capacity for awareness and attention.’

One example of how it works is in dealing with anxiety. A non-mindful person might think, “I am an anxious person”. Someone trained in Mindfulness might think, “I have an anxious thought.” 

Mindfulness and Jesus teach us that we are not our thoughts and feelings –Matthew 6:34. 

We are not defined by our stress, anxiety, and fearfulness. Instead, we can witness them as overcomers and not victims. Christianity today explains that it’s the difference between being on a train of thought and a hilltop looking down at the train.

The command of Scripture regarding all our fears and anxieties is to cast them all upon God because he cares for us, and in so doing, God will keep those in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him, because he trusts in you” (Isa. 26:3). God’s peace will guard our minds, not empty them (Phil. 4:7), and it is this reality, not cessation, that surpasses all understanding. 

Mindfulness helps you to ‘stay’ your mind on God.

The Transforming Gospel-John 4:5-42 -The Woman at the Well

John 4:5-42 -The Woman at the Well

The reason had to do with their history.  Seven centuries before Christ (720 B. C.), there were only two kingdoms, Israel in the North and Judea in the South.  Then the Assyrians defeated Israel and carried them into captivity, leaving just a few people behind. (2 Kings 17:6)

Jews had little to do with Samaritans.  Jews tended to avoid even traveling through Samaria.  That wasn’t easy, because Samaria was the middle kingdom, sandwiched between Jewish Galilee and Jewish Judea.  A traveller from Judea to Galilee had to go through Samaria or to cross the Jordan River to by-pass Samaria.  Most Jews would take the longer journey, spending extra days on the road to avoid contact with Samaritans.

As time passed, the people who had been left behind began to inter-marry foreigners, and the people who resulted from these marriages were the Samaritans. 

In the enlightened day in which we live, that might not seem too serious, but it was serious to the Jews.  They were God’s special people.  By inter-marrying, the Samaritans lost their racial purity, and compromised their status as God’s special people.

A century and a half later, (586 B. C.) the people of Judea––the Southern Kingdom––suffered the same fate.  They too were conquered and were carried into captivity––this time into Babylonia.  But they stubbornly resisted inter-marriage, and thus maintained their identity as the special people of God. 

A century later (450 B. C.), Ezra and Nehemiah returned from Babylon to restore Jerusalem and the temple.  Samaritans came to help in this sacred task but were told that their help wasn’t wanted.  Samaritans weren’t pure enough to help with this sacred task. 

The Samaritans never forgot this insult, so they built their own temple at Mount Gerizim, and began to worship there.  The walls between Jews and Samaritans were high and feelings were bitter.

But Jesus didn’t share this animosity towards Samaritans.  Having to travel from Judea to Galilee, he chose to go through Samaria rather than by-passing it.  You might think that he was just trying to save time if you didn’t know Jesus.  But Jesus always sought out the outcasts of society––the tax collectors, the prostitutes, the lepers––and his travels through Samaria carried him through a nation of outcasts.

THE WOMAN

Jesus came to the little town of Sychar in Samaria and stopped at the well for a drink.  A woman was there, drawing water.  Usually, women came to the well in the mornings and evenings, but this woman came at noon.  It was hot at noon, but she was alone at the well.  That was best.  She didn’t like to stand in line with the village women and endure awkward silence.

This woman usually arranged to be alone.  She prized her solitude.  Her loneliness hurt, but not as much as the unkind glances of the other women––or the sexual advances of the men.

But today, a strange man approached.  She must have been disappointed because Jesus broke into her privacy.  But perhaps he would ignore her.  Men didn’t start conversations with women.  The rule was,

“Let no one talk with a woman in the street,

no, not even with his own wife.”

But Jesus asked her, “Give me a drink” (v. 7).  The woman was surprised.  “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (v. 9). 

Jesus’ next words were curious:

“If you knew the gift of God,

and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’

you would have asked him,

and he would have given you LIVING water” (v. 10),

The woman said:

“Sir, you have nothing to draw with,

and the well is deep;

from where then have you that living water?” (v. 11).

Jesus responded:

“Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,

but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him

will never thirst again.

but the water that I will give him

will become in him a well of water

springing up to eternal life” (vv. 13-14).

The woman said to Jesus:

“Sir, give me this water,

so that I don’t get thirsty,

neither come all the way here to draw.” (v. 15).

Perhaps she spoke in jest, as if Jesus were a bit mad.  But Jesus quickly brought her back to reality.  “Go, call your husband, and come here” (v. 16).

She said, “I have no husband.”  But Jesus responded:

“You said well, ‘I have no husband,’

for you have had FIVE husbands. (popular Lady)

and he whom you now have is NOT your husband” (vv. 17-18).

This was personal––just what the woman had been trying to avoid by coming to the well at noon. 

“Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.  Our fathers worshiped on this mountain.

and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship” (vv. 19-20),

But Jesus responded:

“Woman, believe me, the hour comes,

when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem,

will you worship the Father? You worship that which you don’t know.

We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.

But the hour comes, and now is,

when the true worshippers will worship the Father IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH,

for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers” (vv, 21-23).

Jesus was saying that the old rivalries were on the way out.  Furthermore, because God is spirit, worship cannot confined to particular places, such as Mount Gerizim or Jerusalem.  Worship is an affair of the heart, and true worship is a gift of our hearts.

The woman said,

“I know that Messiah comes,” (he who is called Christ).

When he has come, he will declare to us all things.” (v. 25).

Jesus said:  “I am he, the one who speaks to you” (v. 26).

At that point, the woman left her water jar and ran into the city.  “Come, see a man who told me everything that I did. Can this be the Christ?” (v. 29). 

 They came, and many of them “believed in Jesus BECAUSE OF THE WORD OF THE WOMAN” (v. 39).

How amazing!  In that time and place, people didn’t take the word of a woman very seriously. 

Until Jesus came along, this woman was practically invisible in her own town.  No one would have sent her into town as their spokeswoman.  But her contact with Jesus transformed her life and status in the community.  The people heard her, and had said, “You are right.  This is the saviour of the world” (the meaning of v. 42).

Now the people, who had always avoided this woman, spoke to her with respect. 

    • She had been INVISIBLE, but now she was SEEN.

    • She had been LOST, but now was FOUND.

    • She had been a SINNER, but now was REDEEMED.

William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, said: ‘Go for souls and go for the worst.’

That’s what Jesus did when he turned this outcast woman into a well-received evangelist. 

Jesus does that.  He changes people’s lives.  Jesus especially loves to help outcasts because they most need help.

That’s the Good News of this text.  In this encounter with the Samaritan woman, Jesus not only claims to be the Messiah––he demonstrates what that means when he changes this woman’s life.

This same Messiah changes our lives, Jesus stopped dying on the cross

long enough to answer the prayer of A THIEF.  He stopped in a big crowd one day

9 Tips to keep your mind healthy and sharp: Your Wellness Matters! 

Challenging your brain regularly can have incredible long-term effects. Here are why it’s important to keep your brain sharp: What are the ways to keep your mind sharp? Some of the ways I’m going to talk about are stuff that you already know, but you may want to hear it again. We all have to prepare for old age, especially if we have dementia and Alzheimer’s in our bloodlines. Check out what I have to say on keeping your brain in tip top shape!

Increased Memory Capacity

When you keep your mind sharp by challenging it to learn new things, your brain works harder. As a result, your memory capacity increases.

A well- known and interesting study, that you can find  on  London taxi drivers and bus drivers: a structural MRI and neuropsychological analysis – PubMed (nih.gov) it was discovered that London taxi drivers had a larger hippocampus which is the area of the brain that forms and accesses memories than London bus drivers. This was because the taxi drivers had the daily challenge of finding and navigating numerous streets on demand, unlike bus drivers who follow a set route.

Increased Cognitive Capacity

By regularly challenging your brain, you’re improving and strengthening the connective tissue in your brain’s neurons which helps them perform better and quicker. One can challenge one’s brain in a variety of ways. For example

Learn a new language

Puzzles that challenge you

Learn Meditation because it gives you the ability to gain full control over your mind and how you react to the world. 

There’s an abundance of evidence that shows how important exercise is not only for a healthy body, but a healthy mind also.

Reading is one of the best ways to increase your mental capacity. Because of my dyslexia I had never read a full book until I was well into my 20s. I didn’t know I was dyslexic until I was In my late 40s, but the teachers told me I was just lazy- which I knew wasn’t true. I could have stayed in that mode, but I wasn’t happy that I wasn’t learning anything, and I wanted to be challenged. So, it was then that I decided to bite the bullet and learnt read properly. People who read a lot of books are better at recalling information than non-readers. That’s why you should read more books and publications on a wide variety of subjects, and just challenge your brain! Rather than wasting hours vegging out in front of a TV, which was easy to do during the COVID pandemic- or social media-ing mindlessly on your phone, check out books to read at your public library or on-line

Spend time with people who are motivated, focused and want to learn and grow the way you do https://naturalife.org/mind/motivational-inspirational-quotes. Challenge yourself that includes other people. Trip the Light Fantastic! Dancing is a social interaction that helps in sharpening your brain, while improving your coordination. I like board games but not much else. But you may be different.  Research shows that When you participate in interactive, challenging games and activities with others you’re 65% to 75% more likely to remain sharp and prevent memory disorders from occurring, such as Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Adequate Sleep is so important for not only refreshing your memory but healing your brain also. The older I get the more I suffer from disturbed sleep. Even if you do everything possible to improve your cognitive abilities, your brain still won’t function as well as it should if you fail to get enough sleep. After trying it all and reading all the books, for me, I rise from bed at 5am and get into bed by 9pm and then read for an hour and find that this helps me to sleep all night. I feel so much better for it, getting quality sleep can help your brain recover after a frantic day. Try what works for you and don’t watch TV, or your electric devise after 9pm, or you may be awake all night!

Stop cramming the information in your head! Instead, When you’re trying to recall something you’ve just read or heard, repeat the information out loud as well as write it down. This helps to imprint the new facts to your memory. This is one of the skills I learnt as a Dyslexic but for everyone it’s a wonderful habit to get into enhancing your memory. However, don’t just repeat the information several times and then not review it later.

 Instead, plan to go over it again shortly. Review the new information every few hours throughout the day, every day, until it becomes embedded in your mind and becomes a habit. When you space out periods of study, you’re helping to improve your memory.

Make Schedules. I had to face it that If I don’t make a schedule- stuff just doesn’t get done. Today’s business world is exceptionally competitive and busy. That’s why making schedules and prioritizing should be a requirement for your personal development growth rather than an option. We all know that time flies by, so time management is of extreme importance if you want to advance in your personal and professional development.

The above tips will help you expand your brain function. This process, known as neuroplasticity, is how your brain expands its capacity. Put simply, neuroplasticity, which is also called “brain plasticity”, is your brain’s ability to go through physiological or structural changes.

Delay Natural Aging Mental Decline

Although cognitive decline is usually inevitable with aging, it’s possible to delay the symptoms and beat the odds for developing dementia and other forms of memory loss.

Bu making the effort and just by doing some simple, well-constructed brain exercises, you can improve neuroplasticity. As a result, you stand a greater chance of overcoming the decline of mental functioning that naturally occurs with aging – and that GREAT NEWS!

Is it just me or has the first week or so of the year felt more like a month!? Between balancing work, home, and the grief that I am experiencing, there’s a lot with which to cope.

There are many types of grief that we go through throughout our lives.

We grieve because of the loss of a loved one, as I have experienced recently. We grieve over a divorce and, with it, a loss of lifestyle and perhaps family and beloved friends. We grieve when we move house away from family, friends, and all familiarity. We grieve when we lose our job or enter into retirement when we feel we have lost our sense of purpose.

What is Stress?

Stress is your body’s way of responding to any demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body’s defences kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the “stress response.”

I know it doesn’t feel like it, but the stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working correctly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. 

In addition, Stress gives you extra strength to defend yourself in emergencies. Healthy Stress can save your life, for example, urging you to slam on the brakes to avoid a car accident.

Recognizing Stress

We de-frag our computers because they get clogged up with too much information so they will perform efficiently. The same happens to our minds, and we get clogged up also. You are all over the place. When we struggle to make sense of a difficult situation, it doesn’t leave much headspace to deal with everything else that needs our attention. The Stress of a shock makes us illogical and emotional. 

When you are stressed, You might feel as if your brain has turned to mush, or you have ‘brain fog ‘. Life may feel unreal, as if you are disconnected and floating slightly outside of your body, watching yourself continue doing things. It’s a horrible feeling. 

You could suffer a bit of a temporary personality change due to severe Stress. For example, you might want to be alone and hide out at home if you are usually social. Or if you often take time out by yourself, you might find yourself going out every night, drinking when you usually don’t. Usually financially savvy, you may do unusual things like compulsive shopping.

When Stress merges into burnt-out, life seems pointless. 

When something happens that leaves you deeply upset, and life can temporarily lose its meaning. You can have negative thoughts like, ‘Why keep trying when everything is just going to go wrong?” You need to be aware of this effect as you can easily slip into depression. You may relate to some or all these symptoms -or none. In whichever way it affects you, severe Stress causes suffering.

Where did Jesus Christ come from? Christ before time and space.

based on Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12

It was recently one of my sons 40th birthday, and my daughter-in-law booked a family boat ride on the Thames River in Oxfordshire as our surprise gift to him.

It was a pleasant day but overcast and a little bit of sun here and there and about 18°C, which was very comfortable. We were provided with a lovely picnic lunch, and we had the boat all to ourselves because nobody else had booked a ride on our particular boat, although the other boats were all full of people. 

We saw three Kingfishers, Egrets, and many other birds on the water for our three-hour journey up the Thames River. The scenery was utterly different along each section of the bank, which made it fascinating. Also, what made it enjoyable was that the helmsman informed us of the river’s history in detail. We passed the town centre, saw houses built right on the riverbank and went through a lock which my son and granddaughter opened, so all in all, we enjoyed a pleasant family day. I enjoyed the stories the helmsman who shared with us about the history of the area because, and I like history because to a certain extent, history defines who we are. 

You may not realise it, but the traditions you hold dear, the expressions you use, and the ideas you have originate from a time and place in history. When we realise this, we can change things and create our own traditions: expressions, ideas, etc. The given passage in Hebrews which I encourage you to read is about history. The writer is encouraging the Hebrew Christians about the value of their history in relationship to Christ. The history he is teaching occurred before time and space. So, in this article, I will take a couple of verses at a time and briefly explain them.

Introduction

The opening affirmation in verse 1 that God spoke through the prophets is essential. While Hebrews as a whole is written to establish Christ’s superiority to the old covenant, which is a foundational belief. Thus, the old-new contrast presented in Hebrews is not arguing what is the finest, but between what is most excellent  and the incomparable. It was no easy thing for God’s revelation in Christ to surpass the old ways — but it is terrific that it does!

SO, LET’S JUMP INTO THIS

Verses 2-4 present a series of assertions about Christ that establish this exceptional quality. Each describes aspects of Christ’s status as God’s Son, distinguishing Christ from the prophets. 

New Revised Standard Version readers may be surprised that Christ is referred to as “a” Son of God in verse 2, rather than “the” Son (most other translations add “his,” though there is no such word in Greek). 

Christ’s Divinity

The first point that the verse makes is about the superiority of sonship to being a prophet as a method of disclosure; it is not making a direct trinitarian assertion even if we suggest that the verse ultimately does point to the idea of the Trinity.

The second point is that the prophets were spokespersons for God; we would not claim that any of the prophets were “heir of all things” or involved in the act of creation.  

These two points together establish Christ’s presence at the beginning and at the end, or as revelation puts it, the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13). 

Verse 3 adds the third point of Christ’s role in sustaining all things by his powerful word.” 

So, all three points combine to make a powerful statement about the son’s role and activity in creation throughout time from genesis to revelation. In other words, Christ always existed.

Such a claim of extensive pre-eminences makes no sense apart from understanding the son’s relationship to God, and verse 3 supplies this understanding. 

The meaning of Jesus being “the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being.”  The emphasis on the unity of Christ and God is also seen in Colossians 1:16-20 and 2 Corinthians 4:6, “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

It is worth reflecting on the whole meaning of such phrases is to fully understand the concept. The latter part of verse 3 adds that Christ “made purification for sins” and “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” 

The previous claims focus on who Christ points out the chief elements for the Hebrew believers of the purpose of Christ. 

Christ’s exalted status at God’s right-hand connects into the first claim in verse 2 that he is the “heir of all things.”  It is an image from Psalm 110:1, mentioned here and there throughout Hebrews and the New Testament as a messianic prophecy. 

It also provides the primary basis for the claim here in verse 4 that Christ is superior to the angels. In fact, the rest of chapter one is occupied with demonstrating Christ’s superiority to angels. This theme is continued in 2:5, which points out that God “did not give the coming world…to angels, but to Christ. This idea picks up again on Christ being the “heir of all things” and is seated at God’s right hand, and in the new world, which is the coming kingdom of God, and Christ will be overall.

Christ’s Humanity 

So, how can Christ’s humanity be reconciled with this superior status? The basic answer provided by Hebrews is that for Christ to atone for the sins of humans, he had to share in their humanity. Therefore, Christ’s humanity does not detract from his superiority but makes him relatable to us.

Hebrews 2:6b-8a quotes Psalm 8, as I have read, and the first part of the quote is translated in the RSV as, “What is a man that the Father be mindful of him, or the Son of man, that YOU care for him? the Father made him for a little while lower than the angels. 

Jesus, the Son of Man, referred to in the psalm, was temporarily made lower than the angels when he became human to fulfil this psalm’s prophecy. But, as the rest of chapter 2 explains, he had to become human to save humankind.

Christians today often stumble over the idea of Jesus having to be made perfect, but the claim here is merely about Jesus’ being fitted to his task. Perfection here is not about sin or morals or anything else regarding his character — it is about Jesus perfectly fulfilling his role in salvation. This role requires him to enter the whole human experience. In that sense, Jesus’ experience of suffering and death indeed was a matter of achieving perfection. Verses 11-12 affirms Jesus’ solidarity with humankind – he calls us his brothers and sisters.

How to Reduce Your Stress

One of the blights of humanity is frustration. We get frustrated when we don’t get what we want or what we think we deserve. It seems that we’re a living contradiction. We really are our own worst enemy, working at cross purposes against our own best interest. We want meaning, purpose, and peace of mind, but we aren’t ready to strive or sacrifice for it. Why? Because human beings are forever seeking that kind of thing through enjoyment, which is temporal by nature. 

 Pleasure is a good thing, and we need to have some fun; however, it’s not the be-all, end-all that we imagine it to be, and we become disappointed with our life and can’t put our finger on why. Maybe it’s about expectations, and when those expectations are not met, we become very disappointed. For example, when we are having fun, and the pleasure we feel comes to an end, we want to chase after it, trying to create familiar feelings of joy. Sometimes we try to recreate experiences at a considerable cost to ourselves; we try to convert pleasure into something permanent.

When life goes wrong, we try to fix it by increasing the feel-good factor and strive to make it stay with us, but we just can’t do it. When we are frustrated, we search for ways to make ourselves happy, and often unwisely so. No matter how hard we try, we cannot make what is temporary permanent, and we cannot make what is imagined real. We can’t get back our loved one who is gone, the job that fell through our fingers is in the past, or even the children who have become adults and now live their own lives many miles from us. Also, it’s worth noting here that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its devastating toll, and we will never get back what we lost.  

Several hundred years ago, along with other religions, Christianity began engaging the West in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Although it was not named as such, that is precisely what it is, the aim and objective and results being the same. Within the act mindfulness practice, if one removes the idea of God, it still works. However, I prefer to still relate to God as far as mindfulness goes because it enhances not only my mind and body but also my spiritual person.

The scientific evidence to date of the success of mindfulness to enhance human life is overwhelming, and for those interested in their wellness, we cannot ignore it. Various professional disciplines and social movements, such as medicine and health care, psychology and brain science, and education at all levels, the law, business, leadership, and much more, enhance their practice by inserting mindfulness.

 Today’s mainstream medicine is developing an ever-growing interest in mindfulness-based intervention, such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Mindfulness is something we can practice for peace of mind and a way of relieving a wide range of chronic medical conditions. It is much like snowmelt flowing inevitably downhill from a high mountain source, flowing around obstacles, finding many pathways under the gentle tug of gravity, and ultimately merging into major rivers systems. The gravitational pull is the promise of liberation from suffering and the potential safe harbour. As human beings prepare for the awakening and embodying of wellbeing, greater wisdom and wise action in the conduct of our individual lives so we may peacefully carry ourselves in the world as a species. In other words, mindfulness can become a normal and natural way to live your life, and the feeling of wellbeing is inevitable. Living a mindful life as Jesus Christ did would not end our frustrations but the beginning of successfully managing them. 

Jesus gave us the answer to our frustrations and said don’t chase after things that are here today and gone tomorrow, but rather, strive for eternal things. Eternal things are more satisfying, like top quality peace, joy, and love, that only God can supply. Mindfulness can help us to pursue eternal things naturally and consistently.

Trying to hold onto relationships or things that are gone will leave you frustrated and keep you grieving for as long as you hold onto them. All human relationships, albeit long term, are temporal and subject to the joys and pains of this life; our lives are so fragile and short. The only permanent relationship and forever is a relationship with God offers to us through Jesus Christ.  

The nature of my work is that I aim to empower others with education and motivation to help them make for themselves a purposeful and happy life. In addition, I enjoy helping others to set wellness goals and then provide resources, helping you determine which changes would make the most significant impact on your health.

Mindfulness is defined as a kind of mental training, based upon the practice of deliberately bringing your attention to bear on your physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts. Mindfulness can also be explained as….

  • moment-to-moment awareness
    • savouring life itself
    • observing the moment
    • surrendering to the moment
    • Accepting the present moment
    • Focus
    • witnessing your thoughts and emotions
    • withdrawing attention from the past and the future to the now
    • cognitive therapy
    • a re-minding
    • bare attention
    • paying attention on purpose
    • the unfolding of an experience
    • intentional observance
    • attitude transformation

It is accepted among the ancients and modern researchers that there are Seven Goals of mindfulness practice.

  • Mindfulness is cultivated by assuming the stance of an impartial witness to one’s own experience. It is a sort of non-judgmental and open attitude to whatever experiences arises in oneself.
  • We cannot rush into the experience because mindfulness requires an attitude of patience and understanding that things will unfold in their own time.
  • No moment is the same as any other, each is unique and contains distinctive possibilities. In your moment-by-moment experience, you need to have a beginner’s mind with a sense of curiosity.
  • Developing a basic trust in yourself and feelings is an integral part of mindfulness. It is important to trust in your intuition even if you make some errors along the way. The goal of mindfulness is for you to become more fully yourself since it is impossible to become like somebody else.
  • The goal of mindfulness is to just BE. It is an attitude of non-striving. It is the ultimate of peace of mind.
  • Maintain an attitude of receptiveness to whatever you are sensing, feeling, or thinking. Accept all your experiences as they are at face value because it is present at this moment they are occurring.
  • Intentionally put aside the inclination to elevate some aspects of your experience and to reject others. Be non-judgmental of the experience, it is a way of letting go, of letting things be, and of accepting things as they are.
