Wellness and Your Faith

What makes us well is an important subject. If we are conscious of our health and how to maintain it’s more than half the battle.

Do you know what makes you healthy and how that can impact our faith? Watch the video and read the article below to find out!

In this article, I will share with you what I call well- habits to keep you well. I am not a nutritionist; I am doing a diploma in health and wellness, and I want to share with you that I have learned and found works for me and my work for you also.

The problem is that what is not good for us often tastes great, so we want more. There are man-made foods that are readily available and cheap to buy but are toxic to our bodies.

Sometimes we consume food that makes us unwell, but the goal is to regularly consume the food that heals us and maintains our health.

God put on this earth are as a Bible says herbs for our healing so to be aware of exactly what we are putting into our mouths and what it actually is doing to our bodies is so important if we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay well.

Track What you Eat

Over the years I have struggled to find what food works with my body. As I have been getting older and now on the other side of menopause my nutritional needs have changed. I have tried my best to accommodate this by alerting my diet.

What I could eat a few years ago, seems disagreeable with my body now. So, I try to keep in tune with my body and take notice of the changes.

To be healthy, you need to look at your overall daily nutrition. A good way to do this is to write everything down that you eat. Starting from the first thing in the morning to all of the snacks and everything you drink to the last thing at night.

The reason for this is because we get busy during the day, and we can actually forget what we eat, and we can start eating mindlessly managing the things which are actually detrimental to our health.

A lot of fast foods, readymade meals, snacks that are readily available have are loaded with chemicals that actually can poison us in large enough quantities. Many of them are toxic to the cells of our body and actually can affect us profoundly in a negative way. So, researching to understand and it writing down what you need, is really important if you want to stay well.

One of the advantages of writing everything down that you consume is that you can review it at the end of the day, and indeed at the end of the week, and make the right adjustments.

You can go even as far as documenting exactly what food you’ve eaten and how it has made you react or feel. For example, when I discovered that I was having stomach pains after I was eating started writing down the reactions and discovered over a few weeks that every time I had something containing onions that I suffered from acute stomach pains.

So, this is helpful to me because it helped me to identify the problem and so I could eliminate onions from my diet, and soon as I dared say I had no more pains. And now many years on I’ve tried to introduce a few onions into my diet and I’m fine are if I overeat onions of the pains come back but now I can have a small number of onions and there’s no pain so writing things down and even documenting on how that food reacts with you can be really helpful to you.

Track what you Are drinking

It’s easy when you’re thirsty to just grab the nearest thing and drink it and think that your thirst will be satisfied sometimes we may be drinking value-less beverages which are actually a waste of time and actually could be making our bodies set.

For example, carbonated drinks research shows that they can actually leach calcium from our bones.

I’m sure in very small amounts carbonated drinks would be quite harmless but if you are regularly drinking it throughout the day and you have a significant amount are you actually might be this might be detrimental to your bone health. Particularly if you have osteoporosis in your family and if your woman is you may be likely to get it so you want to stay away from carbonated drinks or anything else that actually may be detrimental to your bone health.

Carbonated drinks are heavy with sugar or contain chemical sweeteners that are known to create cancer in rats – not good!

Low self-esteem and bad eating habits

When what you consume controls you, rather you are controlling it, you have a big problem on your hands. Being not in control lowers your self-esteem.

Self-esteem is where you respect yourself to the point that you esteem yourself enough to look after your mind body and spirit.

When what you eat and drink controls you- you can lose your confidence, self-worth, and then you just start eating any old thing even if it makes you sick. I know I’ve been there, and I am sure you have as well.

A Few Tips to Help

Self-esteem has got a lot to do with a variety of eating disorders. I remember when I was in my late teenage years, I had a bad relationship with food. I was actually frightened to eat because I didn’t want weight gain.

It took me several years to recover, and I had to teach myself to enjoy food. And then later into adulthood had an abusive marriage and my husband was gaslighting me, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.

My husband would comment on how I looked, my confidence remained low, so I became anorexic for many years once again.

Food is fuel for your mind and your body and without it, you will die, and without it, you will get sick.

Understanding Wellness

To understand what wellness is, we are needed to understand our minds our bodies in relationship to food and whatever we consume.

If you have an unhealthy diet by consuming loads of takeaways and carbonated drinks, and other foods that have no nutritional value, you going to be unwell.

For example, MSG is a chemical that is in most takeaway foods and for some people, it causes swelling of the joints and pains in the legs. You may be treated for those symptoms and may be diagnosed with something else but try it if you remove MSG from your diet, you may find that swelling of your joints and pains in your legs may go.

MSG is in most Chinese food and I remember when living in Australia I ate a lot of our Chinese food and began to develop terrible pains in my legs. I discovered the truth of MSG and what it actually does to people, so I removed MSG from my diet – and bingo – the pains stopped.

And now when I have Chinese food I tell them I don’t want any MSG in it. MSG is an emulsifier enhancing the color of the food to make it look more attractive. That’s why Chinese food is beautifully bright colored and it in most frozen foods, takeaway foods and lots of snacks contain MSG. Please read the labels before you but, see if there is MSG present.

Make Nutrition Fun

I found that the best way to approach your nutritional needs is to make it a hobby – make it fun. I make it a prayerful activity as well. I pray over the food as I am preparing it and give thanks to God for supplying me with enough food to keep me healthy.

This also helps me to be conscious that I am the temple of the Holy Spirit and I have a big responsibility towards my health, ensuring that I put good food into my body.

You can make it fun by writing what you eat down, researching it by talking about your nutrition to friends. read books and make it a bit of a hobby, and a bit of a challenge by writing down your goals and the steps towards reaching those nutritional goals.

In this way, it won’t be a chore but a pleasure. Your newfound hobby will become a good habit. Healthy habits maintain and keep your body well – because you are worth it!

It never ceases to amaze me how people look after the houses and their vehicles and never think to look after their health.  They spend hundreds of pounds on their pet’s health and grooming but do not spend one penny on their own health. Many people spend time tending their gardens, decorating their houses, learning new skills, climbing the corporate ladder, but they won’t pay any mind at all to their health or wellness.

Until that is that they become unwell and then suddenly their interest is sparked. But I always say prevention is better than cure. It is best to make health and wellness a hobby, make it a fun thing to do while you are healthy so can maintain your health into older age.

Supplements

The human body possesses an innate ability to heal. But that process can be strengthened and sometimes accelerated in a safe and healthy way, with the use of natural supplements (Not Chemically Derived).

Prevention is better than cure – right?

Well – Yes of course- that’s why natural supplements are also used to prevent potential health problems before they develop. For pharmaceutical alternatives, use quality, natural supplements in a preventative way. When you take natural supplements, you will get a better result than if you take lab-processed, chemical supplements.

So, with natural supplements, it’s about prevention and support. It’s also about having the right information, and only taking natural supplements that are proven, trusted, safe.

Wellness and Spiritually

Wellness- God and You

Like it or not, if you’re over 50, your body isn’t the same as it was when you were a 20-year-old one, so you need exercise now more than ever. I exercise daily and really feel it if I miss a day.

I exercise for 60mins each morning before I start my day. I find this sets my mind to success, health and improves my mobility. I have arthritis throughout my body now,  and moving like this first thing helps me be more active during the day. Exercise in the morning removes all stiffness from lying in bed.

As you know, and I know- you can’t do the same things, at the same pace as you once did. This, of course, is understandable and very natural. Grumbling and complaining is not the way to approach it. But embracing your age and is and finding new ways to improve your mobility is.

You may not want to hear this, but exercise is key to your independence and good quality of life as you age.

If you are a Christian, serving God will be important to you. So, if you are well, serving God is more doable. You will have more energy to help and love others in the name of Christ. Regular exercise will help to maintain your wellness.

For many people, this is no problem as they enjoy exercise. However, many others have not had the experience of incorporating exercise into their daily routine. Therefore, don’t give up hope if you are not in the habit of exercising because you can change this by developing new well-habits.

If you need help with this head over to Your Wellness Matters – The Science of Health & Wellbeing (health-well-being.uk)

If you don’t move it- you will lose it! Our bodies were created to lift things and move. Our muscles are like rubber bands; if they are stretched, they remain healthy and flexible.

However, if they are not stretched, they can contract and shorten. Muscles that have contracted are stiff, stiff muscles are painful muscles, painful muscles that are not used become weak. Muscles are created to support your bones and keep them safe. Weak muscles cannot support bones, so the bones become vulnerable to knocks and falls. So, exercise is so essential when at any age.

The Secret

The secret to fostering the habit of exercise to improve your mobility is to find an exercise you love doing because you’re more likely to stick with something that you enjoy and look forward to doing.

You must build up your exercise steadily. If you push yourself too hard, to begin with, you can cause injury or unnecessary pain. If you hurt yourself, you will probably give on the idea of exercise, and your mobility may decline.

Get started at home with a 10min workout that you can find anywhere on YouTube for free. Or exercise with friends or groups for support and encouragement.

Put it in Your Planner.

To create the habit of exercise, plan exercise into your diary to always make time for it. If you don’t plan for it, the likelihood is that it wone get done.

Setting targets or goals will help to motivate you to get off the couch and do your 10 ins experience routine. Do you want to lose weight? Get fitter? Improve your mobility? Make a goal and ensure you move toward that. Celebrate when you reach that goal – Great Job!

Particularly if you’re over 50, For obvious reasons, it’s wise to speak to your doctor before doing any new exercise.

So, give it a go and enjoy the experience. Then, let me know how you get on with creating your exercise well- habit.

The Church and the Mindfulness question

Over the years, I have worked with many people who really struggle to make self-care a priority or do not know how to start caring for their mental health. So, I tried to find easy ways to help them on their journey. So, I began to research, which led me to the principles of mindfulness.

So I began to practice mindfulness, and in finding its great benefits, I became intensely interested in mindfulness issues around mental health. One thing that puts people off earning about themselves is that it seems far too complicated. So I searched for ways to make it easy and relatable to most people.

I escaped a very abusive marriage many years back, which caused me to be emotionally and physically ill. I developed bodily weakness and became susceptible to the flu. The abuse became a lifestyle- every day was the same. I tried to leave, but many complications prevented me.

However, finally, I did leave the relationship, which took a lot of courage. I began seriously fearing for my safety when my spouse abused me, and I was admitted to the hospital for several days. Living with this man wreaked havoc with my mind and immune system, making me feel like an old lady. Not only within my body but in my mind as well. After we separated and began to live alone. I spent over a year with women’s aid to receive weekly counseling. However, I was still working full time, and my colleagues nor my family knew the gravity of my situation.

For my continued safety and wellbeing, I moved away from my spouse to the other side of the city. On moving day, I had some help from friends, then the time came for them to return to their homes. By this time, it was by late afternoon. I was alone, but I wanted to move my microwave from one bench to another, where the accident occurred. Unfortunately, the microwave oven was cumbersome. I am a petite woman, and I barely could reach the bench height, so I decided to stand on a low table (I am only 4ft 11ins) to move the microwave from one place to another.

Lifting the oven while balancing on the table proved far too heavy for me, toppling me over. As I placed the microwave in place, down, I fell, landing with a sickening ‘thud’, on my right shoulder as I slammed into the hard kitchen floor. I was in great pain and taken to hospital by a friend I called upon. The doctor reported that I had ripped my shoulder, and two of the main tendons snapped. Unfortunately, I lost the use of my arm for over three months, and because I could no longer drive, I also took sick leave from work for that time.

During this time, my divorce went through, and living alone, I was trying to manage one-handed, which was not easy. I prayed and cried and repeated that – a lot! I knew that if I didn’t have a strategy, I feared becoming an invalid and, consequently, being forced to take early retirement.

I became so weak I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. I had physically slowed down because I lost the use of my arm and really didn’t feel well most of the time. To top it all off, I was grieving for my marriage that once held so much promise of love and happiness. However, my brain was still in work mode; it had not slowed me down, I wanted to recover and get back to my usual self as quickly as possible, so I surfed the web, bought books, studied the mind, and its working, and discovered mindfulness.

I wanted to become more self-aware, and like you, I have experienced stresses, joys, and much sorrow. I am also very dyslexic, so I shied away from anything to do with writing or public speaking as much I could. Through the years, I tried journaling but never was consistent with it. Due to my dyslexia, writing caused me GREAT anxiety. So, I routinely abandoned my efforts only after a few weeks.

Then I discovered mindfulness. I have enjoyed practicing holistic living all my life, which means caring for my mind, body, and soul in equal parts. However, I never really ventured into the mindfulness territory. I didn’t know much about it or understand what it was and why I should learn about it.

Thinking about it, I never connected mindfulness with God or my lifestyle or even the health of my mind, body, or soul. The opinions of my ministry friends did not help, warning me against it because it was of the devil. I think this idea is because of the fundamentalist doctrine that anything of the mind has its origins in evil.

This prevailing attitude caused me to write a new book, which I am currently working on. I found significant Biblical evidence to support mindfulness that I had to address the issue and share the theological view of mindfulness.

In my book, I will share what I have discovered about mindfulness within Biblical narratives. The word ‘ mindfulness’ is not found in the Bible, but the principles are. Mindfulness is a modern interpretation of the process, as ancient as creation itself.

I began practicing mindfulness and approached everything I did intentionally. I found that for me, mindfulness worked well if I made it a ‘lifestyle’ rather than as a practice where one dips in and out. Then, of course, I would forget to be mindful through practice, but become a lifestyle, and soon would become a well-habit and second nature.

To create a mindful life, I knew I must become familiar with mindfulness and learn all that I could. I came to understand that if I studied the theories of mindfulness, I would understand it, then slowly, I would become more mindful a little bit more every day.

So what next? What does God want?- Reflections for Lent

Here in the UK, we have had winter, where the days are dark and short, and downright depressing at times. As we are moving into the New Year, thankfully, now the days are getting a bit longer, and we no longer are under Coronavirus strict restrictions. It’s so lovely and oddly strange to be free at last and have the power to choose how we do things. I think it will take a while for our newfound freedom to play out, but we move forward together toward relative normality.

Here we are at the start of Lent and this is where we can ask ourselves the question- So what next?

We’ve been locked down forever disrupting our lives in every way. One thing I know is next for us, is that God wants us to build His Kingdom here through us, and not our selfish empires. It’s so easy to lose focus when everything else is going on around us. Through the pandemic, God taught us forgiveness, patience, love, and kindness, yet our focus can be taken away from Jesus by all that goes on.

Another question we can ask is- what does God want?

We can discuss these questions with our family and Church. We have had two years of stopping and restarting and pausing and not knowing what will come next. But one thing has remained constant. God’s love never fails, His mercy and love endure forever, He is good, and He will never leave us.

So, as we press into the new year, maybe God is stirring up new things within us, so in that stirring, one more question needs consideration – If not now, ‘when’ do we decide what’s next, and what does God want, and how and when do we apply it to our lives and our Church?

Let us not put off seeking His precious face each day. Let us not put off taking the steps that lead us closer to Him and let us remember that God gives us strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. Ephesians 1:18-20.

Bye for now- and remember live life in Hope, Faith & Love!

Lessons in Lent, Can Jesus Really Save Us?

MATTHEW 4:1-11,   THE TEMPTATION IN THE WILDERNESS,

Evil. We must recognize that evil is a personal issue as well as a sociological one.  It wells up, not only in our neighborhoods but also in our hearts.

Is this true temptation or a rite of passage that Jesus cannot fail?  If failure is possible, does God set the bar so low that there is no danger to Jesus?

The author of Hebrews says, “For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).

The Christ who “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7) is subject to every human experience, from birth to death.  He experiences hunger, pain, grief, and anger.  Otherwise, the Incarnation is incomplete, and his ministry is defective.  If Jesus cannot fail, his temptation is less than our everyday experience.

A savior who cannot endure our everyday temptation cannot save us.

An issue for Christians today is the existence of the devil (diabolos).  Does such a being exist or is it simply a primitive myth?

Is Evil Real?

Today we are tempted to see evil as the product of flawed social systems––poverty, racism, ignorance, etc.––and to discount the existence of the devil.

However, “the church teaches the existence of the devil because the biblical writers…taught such an existence and instructed us that Jesus reckoned with such an existence, too – by calling the devil a HE.

The idea of temptation is in short, is a Conflict with Satan… is the underlying aspect of the temptation conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world, which is the plot of the whole Gospel of Matthew, and Jesus was no stranger to temptation…

  • Peter tempted Jesus to avoid the cross (Matthew 16:23).
  • Jesus also commends the disciples for standing by him in his trials (Luke 22:28).
  • At Gethsemane, Jesus struggled with temptation once again (Luke 22:42-44).

Jesus in all aspects fulfilled the Old convent with the new. In fact, Jesus’ temptations were the very temptations––and in the same order––experienced by the Israelites in the wilderness after the exodus. Israel was led to its testing by God, just as Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.

Jesus Identifies with Israel

Jesus experienced baptism & temptation which paralleled the experience of Israel, whose baptism in the Red Sea was followed by their temptation in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1-13).

Israel failed the many tests, going after other gods and reaping bitter fruit.  God punished them but did not abandon them.  Punishment was intended to redeem instead of to destroy.

Let’s briefly look at this parallel.

• The Israelite’s first temptation had to do with hunger––about which they complained bitterly––and which need was satisfied by God’s provision of manna (Exodus 16).

• Their second temptation had to do with testing God at Massah with complaints about water (Exodus 17:2).

• Their third temptation was to fall down and worship a golden calf at the base of a high mountain (Exodus 32)––a high mountain also being the site of Jesus’ third temptation.

But there is Another Parallel—

There is certainly a parallel between Jesus’ baptism and his temptation:

“It is no coincidence that Jesus’ temptation immediately follows his baptism.  Many of God’s people have had similar experiences.

Right after conversion or some other significant spiritual event, precisely when a certain level of victory or maturity seems to have been attained, temptations resume more strongly than ever -Elijah in 1 Kgs 19:1-18 and Paul in Rom 7:14-25.

• And we see In all three Synoptic Gospels, the temptation immediately follows Jesus’ baptism.

• Both baptism and temptation take place in the wilderness.

• The Spirit that descended upon Jesus at his baptism now leads him into the wilderness.

• At baptism, God announced Jesus’ sonship, a relationship that the tempter uses in the temptation––”If you are the Son of God….”

• At his baptism, Jesus was faithful despite John’s protest of not being worthy to baptize him.

  • At his temptation, he is faithful despite the tempter’s best (or worst) efforts.

Let’s Now Look at the Temptations Themselves

  1. Idenity & hungerIf you are the Son of God” (v. 3a).  Following the baptism, a voice from heaven announced, “This is my Son.”  Now the devil says, “If you are the Son of God”––introducing doubt––challenging Jesus to prove the authenticity of his identity.

command that these stones become bread (v. 3b).  The devil attacks Jesus at his weakest point––his compelling physical hunger.  Such hunger drains us, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually.

2. Temptation of Proving who he is-“Then the devil took him into the holy city.  He placed him on the pinnacle (pterygion) of the temple” (v. 5).  We are not certain where this pterygion is located, but the temple is 100 cubits (150 feet or 46 meters) high––the height of a modern 15-story building.  “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down

“Again it is written, ‘Do not test the Lord your God (v. 7).

Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16, giving one scripture precedence over another.  No one, not even Jesus, has the right to put God to the test.  Such testing is evidence, not of faith, but of doubt.  To test God is to put us in the driver’s seat and to require God to follow our lead.

3. Temptation of pride & greed “Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain” (v. 8a). Again, we are reminded of Moses, who met God on a high mountain.

On this high mountain, Jesus confronts the devil.  Jesus has come to save the world, and the devil offers him the world.  and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory” “for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you.’ and, ‘On their hands, they will bear you up, so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone” (v. 6b).

The devil quotes from Psalm 91:11-12, verses that reassure the person “who dwells in the secret place of the Highest” (Psalm 91:1) of God’s help in adversity.

4. Temptation of false worship for reward “I will give you all of these things if you will fall down and worship me“(v. 9). The devil names an attractive price.  “Jesus is not asked to spend his whole life at the devil’s feet.  He is given a real bargain:  one momentary bow––the verb is aorist, suggesting one single act”

But “the devil’s offer of all the kingdoms of the world is a parody in that God has already promised the messianic king, the Son of God, ‘Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession‘ (Ps 2:8; cf. Ps 73:8; Rev 11:15).

The devil’s offer would seem to be an attractive proposition, because even the New Testament acknowledges the devil’s power, calling him “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 16:11) and “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) and “world’s rulers of the darkness of this age” (Ephesians 6:12).

So, What has Temptation got to do With us Today?

Temptation has not lost its power but is still an active force today.  “If God is calling and empowering you to do something for him (John 3:16-17), you can expect to be tested…, and you can expect testing proportionate with the seriousness of your call….  Nevertheless, testing is for our good; when biblical heroes had matured through the time of testing, they knew the depth of God’s grace that had sustained them”.

 How to Resist Temptation

Jesus resists temptation with the use of scripture, as Jesus does here, Satan uses scripture but twists it out of context- so to protect ourselves, we must know the Bible and basic Christian doctrine.

We must have our answer ready because the tempter will not give us time to look it up or to seek advice.  The tempter is a master of timing and insists that we make our decision now.  As the Scouts say, “Be Prepared!”

 Good or Evil, You Choose!

God allows the beloved to choose good or evil and hopes to bless the right choice– To tempt is to hope for failure; to test is to hope for success.

IMPORTANT, however, that the Spirit does not tempt Jesus, but only leads him into the wilderness––goes with him into the wilderness––reminiscent of the 23rd Psalm, where God goes with us through the valley of the shadow of death.  The Spirit leads Jesus––accompanies Jesus.  The tempting is the devil’s business.

Very shortly, Jesus will teach us to pray, “And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13).  “To be tempted (peirasthenai––from peirazo) by the devil (v. 1b).  so here in the Lord’s Prayer The word peirazo can mean tempt or test

So, as we enter into Lent, let us be aware of what we are dealing with & deal with it in the way Jesus did…

  • To tempt is to entice a person to do what is wrong.
  • To test, is to give a person the opportunity to choose what is right.

Let us choose what is right.

9 Tips to keep your mind healthy and sharp: Your Wellness Matters!

Challenging your brain regularly can have incredible long-term effects. Here are why it’s important to keep your brain sharp: What are the ways to keep your mind sharp? Some of the ways I’m going to talk about are stuff that you already know, but you may want to hear it again. We all have to prepare for old age, especially if we have dementia and Alzheimer’s in our bloodlines. Check out what I have to say on keeping your brain in tip top shape!

Increased Memory Capacity

When you keep your mind sharp by challenging it to learn new things, your brain works harder. As a result, your memory capacity increases.

A well- known and interesting study, that you can find  on  London taxi drivers and bus drivers: a structural MRI and neuropsychological analysis – PubMed (nih.gov) it was discovered that London taxi drivers had a larger hippocampus which is the area of the brain that forms and accesses memories than London bus drivers. This was because the taxi drivers had the daily challenge of finding and navigating numerous streets on demand, unlike bus drivers who follow a set route.

Increased Cognitive Capacity

By regularly challenging your brain, you’re improving and strengthening the connective tissue in your brain’s neurons which helps them perform better and quicker. One can challenge one’s brain in a variety of ways. For example

Learn a new language

Puzzles that challenge you

Learn Meditation because it gives you the ability to gain full control over your mind and how you react to the world.

There’s an abundance of evidence that shows how important exercise is not only for a healthy body, but a healthy mind also.

Reading is one of the best ways to increase your mental capacity. Because of my dyslexia I had never read a full book until I was well into my 20s. I didn’t know I was dyslexic until I was In my late 40s, but the teachers told me I was just lazy- which I knew wasn’t true. I could have stayed in that mode, but I wasn’t happy that I wasn’t learning anything, and I wanted to be challenged. So, it was then that I decided to bite the bullet and learnt read properly. People who read a lot of books are better at recalling information than non-readers. That’s why you should read more books and publications on a wide variety of subjects, and just challenge your brain! Rather than wasting hours vegging out in front of a TV, which was easy to do during the COVID pandemic- or social media-ing mindlessly on your phone, check out books to read at your public library or on-line

Spend time with people who are motivated, focused and want to learn and grow the way you do https://naturalife.org/mind/motivational-inspirational-quotes. Challenge yourself that includes other people. Trip the Light Fantastic! Dancing is a social interaction that helps in sharpening your brain, while improving your coordination. I like board games but not much else. But you may be different.  Research shows that When you participate in interactive, challenging games and activities with others you’re 65% to 75% more likely to remain sharp and prevent memory disorders from occurring, such as Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Adequate Sleep is so important for not only refreshing your memory but healing your brain also. The older I get the more I suffer from disturbed sleep. Even if you do everything possible to improve your cognitive abilities, your brain still won’t function as well as it should if you fail to get enough sleep. After trying it all and reading all the books, for me, I rise from bed at 5am and get into bed by 9pm and then read for an hour and find that this helps me to sleep all night. I feel so much better for it, getting quality sleep can help your brain recover after a frantic day. Try what works for you and don’t watch TV, or your electric devise after 9pm, or you may be awake all night!

Stop cramming the information in your head! Instead, When you’re trying to recall something you’ve just read or heard, repeat the information out loud as well as write it down. This helps to imprint the new facts to your memory. This is one of the skills I learnt as a Dyslexic but for everyone it’s a wonderful habit to get into enhancing your memory. However, don’t just repeat the information several times and then not review it later.

Instead, plan to go over it again shortly. Review the new information every few hours throughout the day, every day, until it becomes embedded in your mind and becomes a habit. When you space out periods of study, you’re helping to improve your memory.

Make Schedules. I had to face it that If I don’t make a schedule- stuff just doesn’t get done. Today’s business world is exceptionally competitive and busy. That’s why making schedules and prioritizing should be a requirement for your personal development growth rather than an option. We all know that time flies by, so time management is of extreme importance if you want to advance in your personal and professional development.

The above tips will help you expand your brain function. This process, known as neuroplasticity, is how your brain expands its capacity. Put simply, neuroplasticity, which is also called “brain plasticity”, is your brain’s ability to go through physiological or structural changes.

Delay Natural Aging Mental Decline

Although cognitive decline is usually inevitable with aging, it’s possible to delay the symptoms and beat the odds for developing dementia and other forms of memory loss.

Bu making the effort and just by doing some simple, well-constructed brain exercises, you can improve neuroplasticity. As a result, you stand a greater chance of overcoming the decline of mental functioning that naturally occurs with aging – and that GREAT NEWS!

Three Steps to learn to love yourself and why you should.

Your relationship with yourself is one of the most important relationships you have. So the first thing I want you to do is to spend some time thinking about what you actually think about yourself – write it down.

Looking at your list, if you are finding that you really don’t love yourself, below is a couple of tips to help you to start that all-important relationship with yourself. This month, there will be more blogs to follow with more tips.

  1. Forgive Yourself

Forgiveness means that you accept what has happened and your behavior and be willing to move past it and move on with your life without worrying about things that cannot be changed. As a therapist, I learned this approach to self-forgiveness, which is also the Biblical way to forgiveness. The below method suggests that four key actions can help you to forgive yourself.

The 4 R’s of Self-Forgiveness

  1. Responsibility
  2. Remorse
  3. Restoration
  4. Renewal

Forgiving yourself is beneficial for any good mental, physical and relationship health.

Letting go and offering yourself forgiveness can help boost your feelings of wellness and improve your self-confidence. The act of forgiveness can also positively impact your physical health. Have you heard the expression “he’s eaten up with hate”? Science and the Bible tell us that unforgiveness can manifest itself negatively in our physical bodies. If we can’t forgive ourselves, then it will be impossible to forgive others impacting our relationships.

  1. Remind Yourself – No more People Pleasing.

Have you heard the expression keep your opinions to yourself? Well. That’s the philosophy I was brought up with, as were many of my generations. As a result, I became fearful of what others thought of me. To this end, I expressed no personal opinion of my own in case someone did not agree with me, and I would upset them. To avoid upset, I learned to keep my opinions to myself. Unfortunately, this led me to the weakness of people-pleasing. The problem with this approach is that one forgets what is important in their own life and tends to live ‘through’ other people’s experiences, which I sad.

I began to observe the same behaviors in others and saw what resulted from their lives down the track. Therefore, I decided that I would no longer be a people pleaser and that my opinion does matter. After a struggle of years, much prayer, sweat, and tears, I finally rid myself of such behavior and began to value myself. In valuing myself, I was able to love myself.

  1. Do Things That Make you Happy.

Someone once said, ‘you were not born to live to just pay the bills then die’.

No, you are more highly valued than that!

If you are happy, you will be more productive, motivated, and fulfilled. So when the alarm sounds, you will bounce out of bed in the morning, ready to begin ad brand new day with its challenges. However, if you are unhappy, you’ll be more likely to pull the covers over your head when the alarm sounds because you just can’t face your day.

If you are happy within yourself, it will become self-evident. You’ll automatically spread positivity, love, and joy, and Others will notice and want to be around you. After all, who wants to cozy up to a grump?

So, think about what makes you happy and ensure you engage with those things regularly. Don’t get so busy that that provides no time to do the things you enjoy. Maintaining happiness takes effort because it is a state of mind, and then doing those things that make you happy will reinforce that attitude.

My Top 5 Tips to Self-Awareness of Mind, Body & Soul

The phrase ‘know thyself, is a famous adage that is often attributed to Socrates or Plato. It’s a great saying, and we know it well, but what does it actually mean to know oneself? Of course, this can be a subjective question. However, here are a few questions to start your thinking.

· Do you welcome change?

· Do you believe that you can learn self-awareness?

· Do you believe that if you become more self-aware, it will change your health and life?

Bad Habits

Today, hundreds of thousands are battling a chronic disease, and many have multiple chronic conditions. Statics say that by 2030, these chronic conditions could cost sufferers upwards of 47 trillion U.S. in healthcare spending. Why is this happening? Two short words give us part of the answer- Bad Habits. Changing habits is not easy, and for most people, one habit alone isn’t to blame. Realistically, it’s repetitive, multiple negative habits over time that is the culprit. This is because habits lead us to be well in our mind, body, and spirit.

Alternatively, they can lead us into struggling with un-wellness and eventual sickness. If you want to find a way to overcome feelings that drag you down, you must become aware of what is going on. My mission is to help you work with you through the destructive mind, body, and spiritual habits that hold you back from a fruitful life. I will help you to cultivate good habits. In fact, I like to call them Well-Habits! Let’s get first things first. You cannot develop sound habits if you are not self-aware.

So, let’s take a moment and ask yourself-

· What drives my decisions?

· How do I honestly feel about myself?

· How do I honestly feel about the people in my life?

· What causes me to behave the way I do?

Jesus said, ‘you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Do you want to be free to be the real You? If the answer is Yes! I invite you to read on.

In this article, you will learn my Top 5 Tips for self-awareness

  1. Tip Self-awareness is important
  2. Tip: Understand what self-awareness is
  3. Tip: Become self-aware of your mind (mindfulness)
  4. Tip: Become self-aware of your body (body awareness)
  5. Tip: Become self-aware of your spirit (inner self/spirituality)

I am not explaining each tip but will point out a few points. These tips are for you to explore for yourself, to give you food for thought.

What is Self Awareness?

Self-awareness is often defined as the ability to engage in honest self-reflection. Seeing yourself as others see you. Self-awareness is about understanding why you feel what you do and why you react in a particular way.

Once you begin to understand this, you then have the opportunity and freedom to change things about yourself, enabling you to create the life you want. You will become the CEO of your own life. No longer will you be bounced around by unruly behaviours and emotions. You will be better able to keep yourself in check because you know ‘how ‘you work.

It’s almost impossible to change and become self-accepting if you are unsure as to who you are.

Having clarity about who you are and what you want is empowering, giving you the courage and confidence to make even the most challenging change. How self-aware are you are? Being self-aware is vital for both personal and professional success. It is also vital to overcoming negative behaviours and habits.

When you are self-aware, you empower yourself. You have the power to choose where to focus your emotions, your energy, and your personality so that you can improve and direct the course of your life. Self-awareness helps you be much more aware of your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and helps you guide your life.

Create Good Habits

The best way to continually develop self-awareness is to learn the habit of looking at yourself objectively. In other words, see yourself as others see or perceive you. The more self-aware you become, the more you can improve and make positive changes in your life and lifestyle. As you develop an awareness of the self, you begin to connect with your uniqueness. You connect with the essence that makes you – You!

As you honestly examine your inward self and your associated behaviour, in comparison to your core values, you become self-conscious and an objective evaluator of yourself, which is a very important well-habit to develop. So let me share something with you.

Good Stress

When feeling overwhelmed and panicked, it’s easy to plunge into negative habits that often worsen matters. Stress is your body’s way of responding to any demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body’s defences kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the “stress response. What makes me feel down isn’t always clear to me at the time, which adds to my distress. However, when I realized why these unwanted feelings occurred, I realized more than half the battle was won, which makes me hopeful that things will be okay. I know it doesn’t feel like it, but the stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working correctly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert.

There is good stress that gives you extra strength to defend yourself in emergencies. Healthy stress can save your life, for example, urging you to slam on the brakes to avoid a car accident.

Write it!

Over the years, I have learnt the considerable value of jotting things down. So, when I feel low, I note it down. I briefly describe how I feel and the circumstance that led up to it, then date it. Later, I can look back and understand why a particular activity, circumstance or situation made me feel out of kilter.

Inner self/spirituality

My faith has been paramount in helping me to become self-aware. I am not always aware of myself, but I am mindful of being so every now and then through my day. I also pray, asking God to help me in this. None of us has arrived. None of us is perfect. However, we can work each day to learn by becoming self-aware.

Are you Learning to be self-aware? What Have you learned so far?  Let me know- Leave a comment- I  would love to hear from you!

What is Stress?

Stress is your body’s way of responding to any demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body’s defences kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the “stress response.”

I know it doesn’t feel like it, but the stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working correctly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert.

In addition, Stress gives you extra strength to defend yourself in emergencies. Healthy Stress can save your life, for example, urging you to slam on the brakes to avoid a car accident.

Recognizing Stress

We de-frag our computers because they get clogged up with too much information so they will perform efficiently. The same happens to our minds, and we get clogged up also. You are all over the place. When we struggle to make sense of a difficult situation, it doesn’t leave much headspace to deal with everything else that needs our attention. The Stress of a shock makes us illogical and emotional.

When you are stressed, You might feel as if your brain has turned to mush, or you have ‘brain fog ‘. Life may feel unreal, as if you are disconnected and floating slightly outside of your body, watching yourself continue doing things. It’s a horrible feeling.

You could suffer a bit of a temporary personality change due to severe Stress. For example, you might want to be alone and hide out at home if you are usually social. Or if you often take time out by yourself, you might find yourself going out every night, drinking when you usually don’t. Usually financially savvy, you may do unusual things like compulsive shopping.

When Stress merges into burnt-out, life seems pointless.

When something happens that leaves you deeply upset, and life can temporarily lose its meaning. You can have negative thoughts like, ‘Why keep trying when everything is just going to go wrong?” You need to be aware of this effect as you can easily slip into depression. You may relate to some or all these symptoms -or none. In whichever way it affects you, severe Stress causes suffering.

4 Simple Steps to the best way to make a decision you won’t Regret.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions, WATCH THIS VIDEO!

Sometimes making decisions is hard, especially when some doubts or fears make you reconsider your position, and so you hesitate and wonder if you should give up or keep going. This indecisiveness can be a torment if we allow it to be. Trying to make a choice that feels unclear is really difficult to do. Choosing to move on from something, to take a new job, to begin or end a relationship – you know the big decisions – can sometimes be so all-consuming, confusing, and fearful that we end up making none at all, and just settle for the status quo.
So, how can we teach ourselves to make our decisions with confidence? The best way through is to try to be objective.

Ask Yourself Questions

To be objective, ask yourself a question as if someone else is asking you. Try to remove yourself from any apparent emotion that may influence you and ask..

.a. how do I choose the right thing?

b. How do I know that I am not making a mistake?

In this blog, I am here to share with you that Mindfulness can help you in this regard.’ Along with prayer, I have found Mindfulness to be a powerful tool that enables your mind to focus your attention to get the answers you need. It can become more than a practice, but a lifestyle that helps you be aware at all times. Mindfulness teaches you to pay attention to what’s happening right now. It also answers how and why enabling you to focus on the decisions you need to make.

If you want more details about Mindfulness and how to implement it into your life, search my blog post because I have many articles that will help you with that. T

To make the right choice, you need to understand each part of the step-by-step process that goes into making informed decisions.

Here are Four Simple Steps to help you Prayerfully make informed decisions

  1. Identify the problem
  2. Gather the information to define the decision to be made
  3. Make a choice
  4. Learn from feedback

1. Identify the Problem.

For effective decision-making, you need to accurately identify the problem to be solved. This might sound straightforward, but it’s impossible to begin working on a plan of action when you don’t fully comprehend the question you are trying to answer. Mindfully (stay in the moment) and reflect upon the problem, develop questions accordingly, and then write them down. Look at them and allow them to soak into you. Ensure that these are the right question to ask. Wrong decisions are repeatedly made when the question is incorrectly identified, so make sure you precisely and accurately spot the decision that must be made. When you are satisfied, move to the next step.

2. Gather the information to define the decision to be made.

Now, Take your notebook or computer and write down the information you gather. This is part of the mindfulness process. Mindfulness is kind to your brain and your brain cannot remember all that you need to. So use your notebook so you can refer to it later. Also, by writing it down it can be shared with others. Decision-making requires a good understanding of the current state of the problem to be solved to understand all implications of the potential choices you have. For this reason, it can be valuable to consider the views of all parties involved because they will be affected by the decision. These may include family, customers, employees, or suppliers. Gather accurate information on how the current problem is affecting people now.

Be sure to identify existing conditions that may be connected to the decision in question. As much information as possible should be gathered to build your confidence that a decision has been accurately and appropriately made before additional evaluation and alternatives begin. It is rare for there to be only a decision that is conclusive and there’s no alternative; Once a decision has been defined, the next step is to identify the alternatives to select from. Try to identify as many different alternatives as possible without making too narrow a distinction between them, and narrow the list based on evaluation, resource limitations, or time constraints or any other revenant factor. You may decide to do nothing, which is an alternative worthy of reflection.

3. Make a choice

To make the right choice Meditation or if you prefer to call it- prayer and reflection is a mindful process. Prayer and reflection together give you time and space just for you to clear your head of any bias and look at the facts objectively. There is nothing worse than an emotional decision- I know I have a lot of them behind me!

But when you sit down and close your eyes to meditate or reflect, you are pressing pause for a few minutes. This is a moment of quiet and peace that can help to put all the heaviness and confusion surrounding a big decision into a balanced perspective. This mindful process helps you to connect with what is right for you. There is an inner voice we all hear – our intuition. We often make decisions with our emotions which can be all over the place. If you’re confused, unsure, or overwhelmed by a decision, concentrate on listening to yourself and the voice of others.

4. Learn from feedback

Feedback isn’t simply about someone telling you what you did right or wrong – it’s a process in which you reflect on your decision and take action to correct it or improve future decision-making. Feedback is quick and easy if you ask yourself these questions….

  1. what is the outcomes of the decision?
  2. what I need to improve, or adapt and
  3. Could I have dome thing differently – If so, How?

How to Pray with Different Kinds of Prayers.

watch video

Prayer should not be a scary thing to do. Prayer is simply a conversation with God and should be made all the time, as we see in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. As we grow in our love for Jesus Christ, we will naturally want to talk to Him. To chat with God and to listen to his voice as well. Prayer is a two-way conversation.

You may think that there is only one proper way to pray. But in fact, there are many ways to pray. I think God encourages us to pray in different ways because we are diverse in our humanity. If there was only one way to pray- it would divide us. We would accuse each other of not ‘doing it right.

So, diverse ways of praying do a different thing- achieve different results. This article will show you the various ways you can pray. Let’s start with scripture….

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requestsWith this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requestsWith this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

I love this verse! as we can see, we are told to pray in the Spirit: Pray on all occasions for all the Lord’s people always with all kinds of prayers.’

The Prayer of Faith.

James 5:15 says, “And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.” This is when prayer is offered in faith for someone who is sick, asking God to heal. When we pray, we are to believe in the power and love of God.

 The Prayer of Agreement.

Agreement between people is a powerful thing. Mt 18:19 ‘If two of you shall agree. Two people together constitute a Christian fellowship. The sincere united prayers of this fellowship shall be heard. Christ will be present wherever two or three are gathered in his name. After Jesus’ ascension, the disciples “all joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14). Later, after Pentecost, the early church “devoted themselves” to prayer (Acts 2:42). Their example encourages us to pray with others.

The Prayer of Request or Asking.

James 4:2 that says “you have not because you ask not” is mainly based around two things. First, ask for wisdom because that is the principal thing, and ask with a pure heart. However, it is vitally important we ask and let all of our requests be known unto God. We are to take our requests to God. Philippians 4:6 teaches, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Part of winning the spiritual battle is to be “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication” (Ephesians 6:18).

 The Prayer of Thanksgiving.

We see another type of prayer in Philippians 4:6: thanksgiving or thanks to God. “With thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Many examples of thanksgiving prayers throughout the Bible

 The Prayer of Worship.

Worship means to bow and serve. Worship, therefore, focuses on who God is; thanksgiving focuses on what God has done. There are many examples of how to worship in the Bible. This one is from Psalm 75:1

‘ We praise you, God, we praise you, for your name is near; people tell of your wonderful deeds.

 The Prayer of Dedication.

Sometimes, prayer is a time of setting us apart to seek God’s will. Jesus made such a prayer the night before His crucifixion: “And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will’” (Matthew 26:39).

The Prayer of Intercession/praying for others

Many times, our prayers include requests for others as we intercede for them. We are told to make intercession “for everyone” in 1 Timothy 2:1. Jesus serves as our example in this area. The whole of John 17 is a prayer of Jesus on behalf of His disciples and all believers.

 Praying in the Spirit

The Bible also speaks of praying in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:14-15) and prayers when we cannot think of adequate words (Romans 8:26-27). In those times, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us. The scripture I really love is and relate to is….

Jude 1:20 ‘But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit.

5 ways mindfulness improves decision-making to enhance your business and your life.

I previously wrote an article about 8 tips to compassionate leadership and will link it for you HERE. https://wp.me/p9UfPQ-10o

In this smart guide, I will take it a step further, addressing mindfulness and self-compassion – after all, how on earth can we as leaders be compassionate towards others if we are not firstly compassionate toward ourselves?

This article aims to strengthen your skills to boost your best possible decision-making abilities to enhance your business and your life.

Mindfulness Awakens Compassion

In the first instance, let’s look at mindfulness in the context of decision making.

In concise terms, mindfulness has been defined as paying attention to purpose in the present moment. If you are paying attention, you will automatically become more compassionate to yourself and the people in your environment.

Westernized mindfulness has yielded many positive findings, and practitioners, studies, and patients have been found to cope with pain, stress, emotional exhaustion, and other factors influencing stress and overall health as measured through various questionnaires and brain imaging scans. Further than having a broader awareness, mindful individuals are more creative and are more likely to find innovative solutions to complex problems. The studies have shown that mindfulness helps people handle multiple tasks more effectively, so we know that mindfulness is not just another new age scam but serious science!

By being in a mindful state regarding decision making, you can see the depth of the issues you face more clearly and shift your attention more quickly to what is most needed. The ability to shift your attention quickly and respond suitably is essential to good decision-making.

1.    It can be natural and automatic for us to pass judgment before we know the facts; however, this is not a process that leads to success. Mindfulness helps decision-making by developing the ability to be non-judgmental of the inner experiences of oneself and others. Also, having the ability to disengage from initial thoughts and reactions allows space and time for a full appraisal of the facts and different perceptions before a decision is reached.

2.    A lot of us go about our daily business mind-less-ley. Mindfulness helps decision-making by developing observation by attending to sensations, thoughts, and feelings, creating an acute awareness of the self, others. We become more keenly aware of the environment and the developing changes, which gives us the stimulus to make the right decisions.

3.    I am a procrastinator and have found that mindfulness helps decision making by giving us how to spring into action with awareness. The awareness of the details of one’s actions is an excellent plus because you are not overtaken by distractions but can remain focused.

4.    Mindfulness helps decision-making by putting into thought-forms descriptions of what is really going on effectively. When you are mindful, you become aware of your thought process better and, therefore, develop the ability to correctly ascertain and convey core and peripheral observations.

5.    Being highly sensitive, most of my life, I had got into trouble by reacting to a situation immediately, and usually, it was to my detriment and of others. However, I have found that mindfulness helps decision-making by giving you the ability to perceive your inner emotions and others without having to react to them – Knee jerk reactions are gone forever (that’s the goal)!

I hope that these five reasons that mindfulness helps you to make good, solid decisions are a help to you. I am not implying that you will never make a wrong decision- of course, you will – you are only human after all! However, being mindful will significantly improve your chances of making stress-free choices that work to grow your business and your life!
