Farewell to my Churches

A CHANGE IN MINISTRY

I am pleased to share with you that I have received a call to be the URC minister in the Bridgend United Area. The six churches in this group consist of both URC and Methodist Churches. The Churches issued the call, and I have accepted. I am looking forward to commencing the new post this October 2022. I will be working with a Methodist colleague, and I am looking forward to it very much. 

On this website, I will soon add a tag on the menu bar to the preaching schedule in case you are in the area and wish to attend a worship service. I appreciate your prayers as I lead the Churches forward in their mission, worship and share the love of Jesus Christ.

GOD ANSWERS PRAYERS

This new post answers my prayers for my Ministry’s continuation. Upon the age of 68 URC minister must retire. I reach that age soon and found it difficult to accept that my long pastoral Ministry must end. I asked the Lord to allow me to continue to minister to God’s people according to his will, and my heavenly Father heard me. Otherwise, I’ll have to retire due to URC rules. 

THE CALL OF GOD DEMANDS OUR ALL

I have led churches in Australia, the United States of America, England and now in Wales, UK. The hardest part in moving on to take up a new post is saying goodbye to family and friends. The call to Ministry means many sacrifices; for some Ministers, the sacrifice is small, yet for others, it is overwhelming. However, any form of sacrifice is certainly not easy to accept, but one response is for the love of God and his will for our lives.

I have been asked after 40 years of Ministry, “you must be used to making those sacrifices for now”. The answer is I don’t want to get used to it, people are precious, and the sense of loss I feel when I move on is genuine and heartfelt. If I get hardened in the process, I will get hardened toward the people- and I don’t want that. 

It’s impossible to remain in contact with so many people, but their faces often pop into my mind, and when it does, I bow my head to pray for them.

BITTER-SWEET

As I write, leaving to serve a new pastorate is a happy and sad time for me. The Church folk and the broader community, whom I have served for many years, has been most important to my life.

But at the same time, I am very excited about the new post and what it offers in the future. At least I will spend less time travelling as most of the six churches I will serve are only a short distance from my home.

THE UNKNOWABLE FUTURE

 I will leave my post at Dan Y Graig LEP, Tabernacle URC, and NPLW Methodist circuit on the 30th of September.

The unknowable future can be frightening and downright scary. But that’s when our faith in God’s sovereignty gives us comfort, support, and strength. All new opportunities involve challenges and new experiences that shape and change us. Change also help us to grow spirituality if we approach this transition time positively.

THANK YOU

I announced in August to my Churches that I am leaving the area. I want to thank them for being a generous, wonderful, supportive Church family over these many years.

 Any minister will tell you that one feels that one has never done enough. One lives with the continual frustration of wanting to do more than one can do. I hope my time with you have been constructive and helped you spiritually in some way.  

GOD IS CALLING YOU

 I pray for the very of God’s best for you as an individual and as a Church family. As I leave, I want you to remember that God calls you. Sometimes he can call us to a specific individual task which can also be quite challenging, taking us completely out of our comfort zone. One thing that we are all called to do, however, is to share the good news with all we meet. We must give people hope and the light in Jesus Christ. 

Luke 5:1-11 talks about the calling of the first disciples. They had no idea what would happen when Jesus first called them, but they put themselves out there. They took a risk, a chance. They left everything behind to follow him. 

They weren’t the people you would have expected Jesus to pick to help him in his mission. It’s a bit like you and me. We are ordinary people with no special abilities but are called in God’s ability to be extraordinary in our witness for Christ. 

The disciples, as ordinary as they were, were the people that would change the world. Jesus extraordinarily equipped them to carry out the tasks he had called them to, just as he equips us all, enabling us to change the world where we live.

You may be thinking, what can I do? He won’t call me. I can’t do this, or I can’t do that. But, take it from me; I suppose you might be wrong. 

God calls and equips every one of us because he knows what we can and can’t do and enables us to fulfil his calling upon our lives in his strength. So, we need to listen and trust, then go out and do what he asks us to do, knowing that he goes with us by the Holy Spirit and will never leave us. 

Whenever I think of this daunting task ahead of me, I hear God’s words in my heart ‘Yes, you can do it.’ So, I choose not to think of what I can’t do but what God is asking me to do. No matter what lies ahead, I know he will equip and support me to carry it out, for nothing is impossible with God. 

I want you to think about what you ‘can’ do and go for it because God is calling you, an ordinary person, to be extraordinary for his kingdom’s sake.  So, what is God calling you to do? Will you answer that call? If not, then why not? I encourage you to trust in Jesus Christ, continue to follow him, and answer his call, knowing that he is with you every step of the way. 

God calls each of us to change the world in some small way. So, let us do just that. Let’s change the world by being salt, bringing hope, and light to all we meet. 

As believers, we also are blessed with the grace that equips us for divine service.‘ John MacArthur Jr.

PRAYER 

Loving Father, you call us daily to serve you, so equip us for the tasks you call us. Please help us to fulfil our calling and bring about your kingdom. You know the challenges that every one of us has, and we ask that you guide us through times of transition and challenges. 

As we move through challenges into change, we go knowing that you are with us every stage of the way. So, we ask these and all our prayers in the name of Jesus. Amen. 

FAREWELL DEAR FRIENDS

I came into the Newport area from Lincolnshire in 2011. Since then, I have worked with Stowpark Church Center, Trinity Pontywaun, DanYGraig, St David’s Tysign, Tabernacle Llanvaches, and as a Presbyter within the NPLW circuit and Presbyterian Church. 

Over this time, I’ve worked with community groups which helped to provide a link to the Church. As a result, I’ve been in this area the longest at one stretch than ever in my 40-year Ministry, which has enabled me to form solid friendships – may God bless you.

I am not sure where the following quote comes from. However, I came across it in my files, and I hope it will encourage you in some way.

Do not pray for easy lives;  pray to be stronger people. 

Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers;  pray for powers equal to your tasks. 

Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, 

           but you shall be a miracle.

May the Lord bless and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you – Numbers 6:24-25.

I Discovered the Amazing Benefits of Mindfulness

Hello, hope, faith, love family!

 This is just a short testimonial about how I learned the benefits of Mindfulness as I recovered and how I began integrating Mindfulness into my life.

Why don’t you try out a Mindfulness Lifestyle which can benefit your health and total wellbeing? 

As a Christian, I enjoy looking after my body as it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. I have an obligation to God to care for my mind, as I have the mind of Christ. My spirit/ soul is redeemed by the Lord and it’s my duty to nurture it and help my faith to grow.

I wanted to become more self-aware, and like many of you, I have experienced stress, joy, and much sorrow. I am also very dyslexic, so I shied away from anything to do with writing or public speaking as much as I could. Through the years, I tried journaling but never was consistent with it. Due to my dyslexia, writing caused me GREAT anxiety. So, I would abandon my efforts only after a few weeks.

Then I discovered Mindfulness. I have enjoyed practising holistic living all my life, which means caring for the health of my mind, body, and soul. However, I never really ventured into the mindfulness territory. I didn’t understand what it was and why I should learn it. Thinking about it, I never connected Mindfulness with my lifestyle or the health of my mind, body, or soul.

I escaped a very abusive marriage many years back, which caused me to be emotionally and physically ill. As a result, I developed bodily weakness and became susceptible to colds and flu. The abuse became a lifestyle- every day was the same. I tried to leave, but there were many complications. However, finally, I did leave the relationship. I began seriously fearing for my safety when my spouse put me in hospital. But through all this experience, my lifestyle wreaked my immune system, making me feel like an old lady, not only in my body but also in my mind. After we separated and lived alone, I spent over a year with women’s aid to receive weekly counselling. I was still working full-time, and my colleagues nor my family knew the gravity of my situation. 

For my continued safety and well-being, I moved away from my spouse to the other side of the city. On moving day, I had some help from friends; then, the time came for them to return to their homes. By this time, it was by late afternoon. I was alone, but I wanted to move my microwave from one bench to another, where the accident occurred. Lifting the cumbersome microwave oven, I barely reached the bench height, so I decided to stand on a low table (I am only 4ft 11ins). Unfortunately, I toppled over, fell with the microwave, landed on my right shoulder, and slammed into the hard kitchen floor. I was in great pain and taken to hospital by a friend I called upon. The doctor reported that I had ripped my shoulder, and two of the main tendons snapped. Unfortunately, I lost the use of my arm for over three months, and because I could no longer drive, I also took sick leave from work for that time. 

During this time, my divorce went through and living alone; I was trying to manage one-handed, which was not easy. I prayed and cried and repeated that – a lot! I knew that if I didn’t have a strategy, I feared becoming an invalid and, consequently, being forced to retire early. 

I became so weak I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. I had to physically slow down because I lost the use of my arm and didn’t feel well most of the time. However, my convalesces afforded me time to think, pray and reflect. I was still grieving for my marriage that once held so much promise of love and happiness. 

However, I wanted to recover and return to my usual self as quickly as possible. Therefore, I needed to learn the best route to recovery for my mind, body and spirit. Therefore, I decided to do a little research. I surfed the web, bought books, studied the mind and its working, and discovered Mindfulness. 

I watched Youtube videos, learnt Mindfulness from books and even found its principles in the Bible! As I studied, I began seeing the many benefits that would help me return to my usual self. 

I began practising Mindfulness and approached everything I did intentionally. I found that Mindfulness worked well if I made it a ‘lifestyle’ rather than a practice where one dips in and out. I would forget to be mindful by practice, but becoming a lifestyle soon became second nature.

Working through Chronic Pain Syndrome

Hello, hope, faith, love family!

I thought I’d make this blog post an informal one. I have been away from my desk lately because I am recovering from COVID, which hit me quite hard and put me out of action for a couple of weeks. 

As I was convalescing and thinking about how to restart my work routine, I would have to create a new routine since the circumstances have changed, which I will share with you in my next post.

Being in bed daily, I’ve left my budgeting unchecked and neglected my website and social media. As a result, I have not done any writing, only made a few phone calls and lost interest in anything that I once found very exciting. 

Even writing this blog post is challenging. I’ve been thinking about it for several days and now forcing myself to sit down. Still, it was just thinking about doing it when I haven’t quite recovered. I have to refocus my mind completely out of routine and when something used to be just second nature getting out of routine is like you have to almost relearn again since really very strange, whether that’s my dyslexia or just me. Have you experienced a similar thing? If you have, let me know.

 I think pain doesn’t allow you to focus on things you want to, and I experienced a lot of joint pain in my COVID experience. Laying in my bed, not knowing what to do with myself, the pain was so intense; my thoughts went to those of you who live with chronic pain, day in and day out. Mine only lasted a week, which caused me a lot of distress, but if you live with chronic pain, I understand it will drive you crazy. 

When dealing with chronic pain, one’s whole focus is on how to get through the next hour, indeed, the next minute breathing through the pain. There are many reasons for chronic pain, and I won’t deal with them here. But I want to encourage those experiencing chronic pain and struggling to live with it. I hope to bring you some measure of love and put a smile on your face, even if it’s only for a few minutes. 

Pain is such a Private and Personal Thing.

As a child in Australia, when one was sick or injured or had some pain, parents and teachers told us to put our socks up and get on with it. As a 17-year-old, I was in the hospital for three days. I had an operation on the soul of my feet because I had a verruca dugout. It was so deep I had about four stitches, and every movement of my foot was excruciating. When the pain got so much I was writhing from side to side in the bed, the nursing staff told me to pull my socks up instead of administering more painkillers. It’ll soon heal. And that is an excellent philosophy to measure because it stops one from feeling sorry for oneself while motivating one to push forward to better things into recovery. However, this attitude is not helpful when living with chronic pain day in and day out, as no matter how often one pulls one’s socks up and tries to get on with them, it never seems to work. We are human beings, and sometimes a little tea and sympathy do not go amiss.  

When dealing with pain, your resources get depleted, and you feel exhausted and worn out from thinking about how much pain you’re in. But, unfortunately, when you’re in pain, it does dominate your thinking. It dominates your decisions and lifestyle, even what you eat, what you wear, how you sleep, et cetera, et cetera; living with pain dominates every part of one’s life. And when you try to share how this pain feels with even your closest loved one, it does fall short of what you’re experiencing. 

Someone else may be battling chronic pain similar to you, but it’s not the same as your pain. We must understand that every person experiences chronic pain differently; sharing and finding solace through others can be difficult. But when one does find similarities with another, it can help and be of great comfort to you.

 Look to join a support group of some sort or therapy group. People share their stories in support groups, so listening to other people’s stories will help you not feel alone. In addition, listening to other people’s experiences will help you realise that others are experiencing something similar and may share tips about coping with day-to-day activities. 

Networking

For all of us, no matter who we are, healthy or not, networking is such an essential part of our human social experience. Whether we network for work, support or friendship, networking is vital for us to be able to live an integrated, purposeful, and fulfilling life. 

I encourage you to ask someone to help you find any support groups in your local area or a group that meets online. However, If you haven’t got anybody to help you, take courage and do the research for yourself when you’re feeling up to it. Of course, this can prove difficult because depression often comes along with chronic pain, and when one is depressed, you don’t want to do anything or try to motivate yourself.

Reaching out to strangers can be scary and problematic, but isolation is the only alternative. Suppose you have got somebody to help you with this. In that case, ask them for their assistance; perhaps you have your local doctor or your local social worker or counsellor who may be able to help and guide you in this.

Making Most of the Good Days

In my younger years, I worked as a nurse. I am an ordained minister of 40 years, hospital chaplain, mental health chaplain, counsellor, and coach. I’ve come across many people with chronic pain who say, ‘today is a good day; yesterday was a terrible day.

 I learned a lot from these people. First, they taught me well that making the best of their good days made them as productive as possible. We all need to find meaning and purpose and setting goals to fulfil our dreams is essential. 

It’s like the old saying ‘make hay while the sun shines ‘. You never know; tomorrow might be a bad day spending most of your time on bed rest. So if you find yourself with strength and vigour today, use it to do the things you want and need to do.

 Here’s a word of caution when you feel better, don’t overdo it because when you feel good, and you feel great, I can do things I haven’t done for a while, and you can go overboard and find that you wish you hadn’t you might you have set yourself back. So, gauge yourself, take it little by a little, and set your daily goals. Make realistic goals. If you don’t complete them, that’s fine when you’ve got another good day to fulfil those goals.

  Communicate with Your Loved Ones

I had one child who would never open up and talk to me. I would ask her to come and sit down and have a chat because something was bothering her, and she would reply -‘ you don’t understand.‘ My reply would always be, ‘share it with me; I will try to understand. ‘

She would look at me blankly, shrug her shoulders, repeat the chant- you just don’t understand and walk off. This unsettling behaviour continued through her teenage years and very sadly into adulthood. It hurts when you want to help someone, and they refuse. However, if they give you the benefit of the doubt, they may find that you want to listen to their problems and help them through them. 

So, the point of this little story is that please do not ‘presume’ that your loved one does not want to hear about how you’re feeling. Instead, ask, ‘may I share with you how I feel today?

 It will probably be the wrong time if you suddenly dump all of your mad, bad, sad feelings upon them without any warning. There is a chance that you’ve caught them at the wrong time and are unprepared. They may want to listen to you but can’t listen to you at this particular time. If this happens, you could easily take it as rejection. 

 People are busy and have a head full of things they have to get done. They have their issues to cope with, so it’s best to ask them if you could about how you’re feeling today. In taking this cautious approach, you’re also respecting their space and time. If your loved ones learn a bit more about what you’re going through and how you feel, they may be more ready to learn how actually to support you. If they don’t want to listen, I am sure that there is somebody else, if not within your family, but a friend that will be there with you and for you through thick and thin.

Keep the Faith

I find it hard to do any form of Bible study devotion or even formal prayers when unwell. However, I do talk to the Lord like I am talking to you; it’s just that I can’t do anything structured and organised, which leaves me exhausted, and my mind is all over the place! 

When you are experiencing chronic pain daily, you may find that any form of structured Bible study and prayer may be impossible. Yet, nurturing your faith is essential because, like anything else, it can wane, get weak then eventually disappear through neglect, and you don’t want that. 

When you are not up to prayer or Bible study, audiobooks can help. If you have a smart TV or an iPad, signup to Google and download the YouTube app, it’s completely free, and you will get unlimited access to YouTube.

On YouTube, you will find audiobooks, hundreds of Christian audiobooks and indeed fiction or any other books that you want to listen to. You will also find the Holy Bible, sermons, Bible studies, prayers, and more. In addition, you will find the complete audiobooks of the Old and New Testaments. Even if it is for 10 or 15 minutes a day, listen to the Bible and allow it to soak over you. If you are alert enough, take a few notes as you hear the person narrate whatever part of the Bible you’re listening to. Don’t forget to ask your Pastor or Christian friends to pray for and support you.

Don’t Give Up

I’ve already shared that I’ve ministered to many suffering from chronic pain syndrome. In my observations, once a person gives up on themselves, gives up hope of any remedy, or stops learning how to cope with their pain, they begin a deep downward spiral. 

Don’t allow your circumstances to overwhelm you to the point where you don’t want to carry on living and withdraw from people and society.

People with chronic pain often self-medicate once they’re in a lonely state. When there is no one around you to love and support you, addiction can develop very quickly. Before you know it, you can be addicted to prescription drugs, alcohol, or even illicit drugs to cope with the pain. Addiction is just a big, endless pit of horror that is deeper than you realise and challenging to get out of – so I encourage you not to go there in the first place.

You’re Stronger Than You Think

Don’t give up on your ability to find your way through this; you are far more potent than you think. And for those of you who have faith in God through the Lord Jesus Christ as you call out to God, he will strengthen you and help you to find that you have got ideas and the motivation to fulfil those ideas to be able to help you to live a more fulfilling life.

Facing the mountains in our lives can be difficult. Any sickness, whether associated with pain or not, is a horrible place. When we accept our situation, we find a way to cope with the condition. I’ve seen folk who have struggled against their situation and refused to accept their condition are more likely to slip into depression because they will not face the reality of what they are experiencing. 

Even though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death

God never said that you would find never experience the valley nor avoid the valley, go around it, or pretend it’s not there. God didn’t say- confess it away, pray it away!

No- God is even though you walk through the valley, Father God is with you, walking with you. God is there to bring comfort, healing, and strength. Psalm 23 Unwrapped explains how to journey through that dark valley into restoration.

God has Wonderful Plans for You!

The Lord has plans for you. Reading for Sunday 21st of August year C.

     Jeremiah 1: 4-10

‘Now the word of the Lord came to the same before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’

Do you often feel overwhelmed regarding God’s call upon your life? Do you feel sometimes that you aren’t good enough or prepared enough? If you can say yes to those questions, then continue reading this blog post.

We are delving into the character of Jeremiah who symbolised the overwhelming burden that God’s spokesperson faced during that continual decline of the people of Israel. Called and appointed by God, Jeremiah undertook the daunting task of proclaiming a message of judgement against Israelites and their removal from the land that they once received as a gift from God’s hand. While overwhelming, Jeremiah’s warnings came from God alone, and the profit had no recourse but to share them with the people. (Jeremiah 20:9).

The belief that you are known by God and have always been known by God since before one’s conception deeply strengthens your sense of individual worth. Our human nature tells us that in a vast universe our small lives might be meaningless.

God declares to Jeremiah that ‘before I formed you in the womb, I knew you’.

I think we really need to hear the affirmation that God has known us longer and better even than our own parents and prior to our own consciousness. Who knows you better than anyone else besides God?

The Call

Awareness and trust in God’s presence are what drives out fear and bring deliverance. For Jeremiah, this will include fears and dangers from actual enemies who both slander his name and seek physically to harm him. Importantly, this promise of divine presence drives out the inner fear and leads to self-doubt and the temptation to abandon the trusting God. At the heart of the call is to proclaim God’s word. God’s call upon our lives is not without danger or temptation. It is certainly not a bed of roses and probably a little bit more overwhelming than we had expected. Despite any difficulties that you face God uses you to help others because God is a rock who saves and rescues. Likewise, this is what happens in the book of Jeremiah.

The Task

As we read Jeremiah’s words it is full of anguish and grief over the spiritual state of Judah (a tribe of Israel). In spite of their chosen status, in God’s eyes, the people had continually given themselves to idolatry and proven themselves incapable of keeping their covenant commitment to God. God had willingly bound himself to these people in covenant love and the people were expected to respond with worshipful obedience. But they did not. As a result, God wanted to bring them back to himself, so the coming judgement would be sure, swift, and severe. God brought Judah back into his loving presence through Jeremiah the prophet.

At the time of Jeremiah’s warnings, the nation of Judah was in its last days. Jeremiah warned that God would raise up the nation of Babylon to defeat God’s people and haul them off into captivity. The fall of Jerusalem in 586BC fulfilled the long-standing warnings regarding the results of Judah’s sinful rebellion. However, Jeremiah’s warnings are not without a glimmer of hope for a secure future.

The prophet knew that God’s character was unchanging and his mission sure concerning the people of Israel, so he was assured that God would eventually rescue his people. God would secure a remnant of worshippers from amongst the exiled nation of Israel. Because of God’s faithful love for his people, he would bring the people back from obscurity into a right relationship with himself, and we see this in Jeremiah chapters 30 to 31. As a result, the people would once again sing for joy at the glory of God’s salvation.

Jeremiah’s Words are Relevant for Us Today

Later down the track through Jesus, Jeremiah’s words ring out to Israel once again and still hold true for us today. God promised a new covenant and you will find that in Jeremiah chapter 31 to 34. God’s promises are fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ who secured salvation through his righteous life substitutionary death and victorious resurrection. Through faith, God’s people can be born-again to a living hope that pulses with life eternal. Sin is grotesque and the consequences are painful, and yet Jesus’s work is altogether complete and provides the sure hope that God will fulfil his promises to his people.

Jeremiah found the call upon his life difficult to obey. There have been many times when I have struggled with God’s call upon my life not least the continually moving and travelling and saying goodbye to loved ones. Answering God’s call can be painful and often confusing at times, however, I have found solace in Jeremiah 29: 11, which points out

      ‘For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.’

I encourage you today to take heart that God is with you by the Holy Spirit to give you strength courage and hope every single step of the way as you fulfil his call upon your life. God does not expect you to climb the mountain in one go. Rather, it is putting one step in front of the other and trusting God in every single one.

Excuses Galore!

So, you may make the excuse to God I am not old enough, or I am far too old. My health is failing. Or I am not educated enough or some other excuse we may come up with, but which really are just lame excuses. And they are lame excuses because they are quite unfounded. The apostle Paul says that when I am weak, then I am strong in the Lord. Even in your weaknesses, Father God will give you his strength. All you need to do is to give God your doubts and he will give you his faith.  Give God your mind body and spirit for his holy use, and he will surely fill you to overflowing as you reach others with his love and grace in ways that you could never have imagined.

Abandonment- Life Can Be Scary -Paula Rose Parish Story

Psalm 23 Verse 3b-he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 

I was living in Oklahoma USA when without warning, Dan my husband and father of our four children announced he was leaving our family. He grabbed everything in sight and crammed what he could into the family car. With panic and terror in my heart and voice, I cried out-you can’t leave us with no money! (he had exclusive access to our bank account). With a smile, he slowly reached into his pocket and drew out a single dollar. As he gave it to me, he said, don’t let anybody tell you that I never left you with any money and then disappeared into the night.

That was 1994, and from that date to this, neither I nor the children have seen him again. Dan did not explain his reasoning for leaving, we were terrified, not knowing what the future would bring.

  A year later, the week of my 40th birthday, the children and I were living in the UK. To my surprise, my youngest son, who was six at the time, received a letter from Dan his father. The letter was bizarre, not at all one that should be written to a six-year-old. However, through this letter we learned the reason for his abandoning us. The letter stated that he left us to start a new life with another woman. This woman, he explained, was younger, prettier, and smarter than me, and had no children to hold him back. He wrote that it was God who told him to leave because the burden of wife and children were hindering him from God’s perfect will. To his absolute shame, he used God as a justification for his actions. The reality was, unbeknown to me, that for some time he was in having committing adultery even though he professed to be led by God.

The truth is that our Shepherd- God, only leads us in the path of righteousness, not into paths of the unrighteousness of sin. My now ex-husband, was on an unrighteous path leading to nowhere-land and blamed the children and me instead of taking culpability himself. To avoid any responsibility in the matter, he put the onus on God and us. The story that God told him to leave was of course, fabricated.

Dan did this I believe, so he could be free from blame and the judgement of others. Sadly, some people believed his lies for a time because he was so convincing, which is a typical personality of a narcissist. This kind of behaviour has nothing to do with Gods of love revealed to us in the Bible, but a false god of one’s own making. This was a God of Dan’s own making, created by his selfishness, delusion, and sin. In the shock of our sudden loss, we grieved and felt the loss deeply, our lives were never the same again.  

Be Wise in What You Do

 Decision making when we are distressed is tricky. It is so tempting to make kneejerk choices like Dan did, without fully considering the consequences. We can be fooled into thinking that so-called well-meaning folk have our welfare at heart. There are scammers out there who make offers that we may interpret as being an answer to prayer, but we need to be alert and discerning. If the paths they offer do not lead to righteousness, they will lead us to sin.

Be watchful, if there is something that does not rightly benefit you, your family, future, or anyone else, do not do it! One great rule is- if in doubt- don’t! If you smell something fishy, trash it immediately. When the red flags come up, take notice of them, because God only leads us on the paths of righteousness. Satan appears as an angel of light but is really our foe. Satan’s job is to cause us to detour onto the unrighteous path, bringing us to eventual destruction.

The opportunity you’ve been offered may look incredible, far too good to be missed, it appears as an angel of light. It may be an opportunity on a new relationship, more money a new job or something illegal. Whatever it may be, every one of us can be fooled into believing that this is a good thing, eventually only to find it is nothing but ashes. The best person in the world can be tricked and fall for the promises of a persuasive individual. What are we to do?

The paths that God has chosen for us are clearly marked out for us in God’s Word. No path of righteousness, for example, will ever pass through the field of extramarital sex. No path of righteousness will ever travel over the ground of gluttony, or slander, or dishonesty, or to engagement with anything illegal. The righteous path will not lead us away from the Ten Commandments.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

Why is the Green Grass in Psalm 23 Significant for you?

Psalm 23 is set in the land of Israel where the city of Jerusalem was considered to be its center. Around the outskirts of Jerusalem, are rolling hills. The hillsides are not green and lush but are mainly bare ground and rocky desert with perhaps a scattering of grass popping up here and there.  because the rainfall is very low it is hard to find lush, green grass, so shepherd had to travel far and wide in search for green grass for their sheep. So what David was writing about was not the landscape surrounding Jerusalem. David did not write about in Psalm 23 that there was brown grass or sparse grass but made a point that the grass is green.

So, what could David have been referring to when he wrote that God makes him lie down in green pastures? To find out we need to take a look at the colour green to derive its meaning. In art, green is a secondary colour which is made by mixing yellow with blue. Yellow is the colour of the sun which gives life and warmth, and blue is the colour of the sky because it holds the oxygen giving us atmosphere, both are life-giving. So, combining yellow and blue gives us green. The green colour of plants, trees, and grass occurs because they contain chlorophyll. The green pigment is essential in photosynthesis, allowing plants to absorb energy from the sun so they can grow and flourish.

So, putting this all together, we understand that in the Bible, the green grass is a metaphor for the sustainability and flourishment of life.  To go a little step further, most biblical scholars agree that one of the primary Biblical meanings of the colour green is the immortality of the soul.

Green denotes that the soul- the real you- grows and thrives after the death of the physical body.  Green can also be a symbol of resurrection, praise, spiritual growth and prosperity, new beginnings, and renewal. As so it is with you. God by his Holy Spirit walks with you, beside you, and is leading you into new beginnings and renewal; to help you grow and thrive. 

We see here that Green is used as a metaphor to bring home the point that God leads you to grow and flourish in the midst of the most difficult circumstances.

Experience being- we also experience doing= discipleship of Christ

The writings of our text in John’s gospel and in the Epistle can seem puzzling because they do not come down on one side or the other, sort of like the question which comes first-  the chicken or the egg ?

So, which comes first, the love of God or the love of our neighbour?  Which is more important, being or doing?  Are we saved by grace or by works?

Instinctively most people come down on one side or the other and we tend to hear only those parts of the good news of Jesus Christ that seem to reinforce what is comfortable to us. 

Some people instinctively hear the message in Jesus’ first public statement of ‘good news to the poor, release to the captives, sites of the blind, freedom for the oppressed.  Luke for 4.18-19.

Indeed, this is the heart of Jesus’ ministry they argue.  Christians witness Christ as the most faithful when he is actively doing things to improve life for society.  Other people automatically see that all Jesus’ activity arises out of his times of silence and prayer.

So there this tension between being and doing, and many of us struggle with these ideas.

The problem is that today’s gospel and Epistle, like most New Testament, does not have an either-or worldview.  This means the Bible is not written with a dualistic lens.

 Instead, they argue it is always both.  Both Epistle and costs for talking about the nature of God, which we contemplate with or at which we are drawn deeply into. We see this in Jesus ministry that begins starts not as he stands up and speaks-  but as he wrestles alone in the desert.

First, St John talks about love as the fundamental nature & of God.  Out of love, God the Son comes to die so that we can draw back into the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In God, love is not an abstract quality but one we experience directly and actively.  We experience being- we also experience doing.

God acts lovingly towards us, and that is how we know that he indeed loves.  Being and doing are not separate – God is love and acts lovingly in creation. 

For us, that is not always the case because, unlike God, we are not yet complete.  We don’t always act lovingly in creation. The people to whom 1 John is addressed are presuming the people who have accepted the saving love of God.  But for most of us particularly in this western world view, Love has a beginning and a finite end.

The view of Love that God has, is embed within his own self- God is love. Its is possible to be and do at the same time. Doing comes from our sense of being- which has not a start or end- it just is.….

Look at it his way – The great aim of our life is to make the beginning and the end of love get further and further apart from us so that there is more and more room to love.  In other words, God’s love has no beginning and has no end, and nor should ours.  As the great 17th-century poet John Donne said in his Christmas sermons, God love is like a circle.  It’s endless.

Our gospel reading points out another one of God’s undeniable characteristics: life

The language 1 Johns about love can sound repetitive and soft-edged, despite the urgency and power of what’s being said.  Still, if you put 1 John alongside Johns gospel, the reason for the urgency becomes clearer. 

God is the only source of life.  If you pick flowers, they die.  If you take people away from God, they die.  It is not that this is a punishment, exactly.  It is more than it is just a fact of life.

 If people choose to live apart from God, that choice is sustained into eternity. 

Because it is sustained into eternity, God urgently invites us with the help of the Holy Spirit to live in God in Christ, each and every day that we enjoy mortal breathe.

 In choosing God, we are grafted as branches into the true vine. There we can live, and bear fruit of the exact nature as the tree. 

The choice between being and doing is a false one.  You are either alive with the life of God, the life in which there is no distinction between what God is and what God does, or you are not alive at all.

Many of us would like to rely on the life-giving love of God for ourselves without having to change too much.  In today’s story from Acts, Philip wouldn’t understand the question, ‘should I spend time being or doing- should I be praying, or should I go out and preach?

Philip has allowed himself to be directly grafted into the life of God.  so, Philip prayed, and Philip also preached.  Phil came across An African who was miles from home. This guy was reading the Bible – Hebrew Scripture- and had some questions.  Philip reacted by being and doing, at the same time and the African eunuch came to faith and was baptised. Most of us wouldn’t know such an opportunity if we part if it passed us by, not even in a golden carriage and so we miss the chance that Philip seized to work with God.  And as Philip showed people the love of God wherever he went.

And we see the love God for us in elements of bread and wine.

Why is Significance and Purpose, Important to your Life?

We all need meaning, purpose, and the pursuit of a goal more significant than the self.

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” – Friedrich Nietzsche.

Viktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, as well as a Holocaust survivor. Frankl was the founder of logotherapy, which is a form of existential analysis that is focused on the meaning of human existence as well as on man’s search for meaning. His work became popular and was publicized in his classic book, Man’s Search for Meaning, it illustrates the significance and universality of meaning as a motivating force in human life.

The need for meaning is a powerful and fundamental human need. We cannot thrive without significance and purpose; it gets us up out of bed in the morning. Nietzsche’s’ work outlines this, and his work is readily accepted among academics.

Nietzsche, however, did not hypothesize anything new. His thesis echoes the Biblical principles of significant meaning. The concept of significant meaning is an age-old need that is in-built in all of us. It’s worth noting here that if we are created in God’s image, and we need a love connection and significant meaning, then God needs that as well. This might be why he took to the task of creating and keeping in touch with his handiwork – how do you view this?

 One thing is for sure in order to find a healthy way of life that is lasting, you must believe that you are valued and very much loved. The Shepherd values you and you are very much loved and wants you to be free to love yourself and others. Each of us is unique and made in God-image. Whether we realize it or not, we are connected to our Creator, to each other, and to all of creation, giving us joy, meaning, and purpose.

Each of us is incredibly special and loved by God, our lives have deep intrinsic value; therefore, we need to value and love ourselves. This means looking after ourselves and asking for help when needed. We hear so much about loving our neighbor, but how often do we hear about loving ourselves?

You are of immense value and a significant human being in time and history. Today is yours, you are created for a particular purpose, so go and find it. The real you, the true self, naturally strive toward this end. 

Wellness and Your Faith

What makes us well is an important subject. If we are conscious of our health and how to maintain it’s more than half the battle.

 In this article, I will share with you what I call well- habits to keep you well. I am not a nutritionist; I am doing a diploma in health and wellness, and I want to share with you that I have learned and found works for me and my work for you also.

The problem is that what is not good for us often tastes great, so we want more. There are man-made foods that are readily available and cheap to buy but are toxic to our bodies.

Sometimes we consume food that makes us unwell, but the goal is to regularly consume the food that heals us and maintains our health.

God put on this earth are as a Bible says herbs for our healing so to be aware of exactly what we are putting into our mouths and what it actually is doing to our bodies is so important if we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay well.

Track What you Eat

Over the years I have struggled to find what food works with my body. As I have been getting older and now on the other side of menopause my nutritional needs have changed. I have tried my best to accommodate this by alerting my diet.

 What I could eat a few years ago, seems disagreeable with my body now. So, I try to keep in tune with my body and take notice of the changes.

To be healthy, you need to look at your overall daily nutrition. A good way to do this is to write everything down that you eat. Starting from the first thing in the morning to all of the snacks and everything you drink to the last thing at night.

The reason for this is because we get busy during the day, and we can actually forget what we eat, and we can start eating mindlessly managing the things which are actually detrimental to our health.

 A lot of fast foods, readymade meals, snacks that are readily available have are loaded with chemicals that actually can poison us in large enough quantities. Many of them are toxic to the cells of our body and actually can affect us profoundly in a negative way. So, researching to understand and it writing down what you need, is really important if you want to stay well.

One of the advantages of writing everything down that you consume is that you can review it at the end of the day, and indeed at the end of the week, and make the right adjustments.

You can go even as far as documenting exactly what food you’ve eaten and how it has made you react or feel. For example, when I discovered that I was having stomach pains after I was eating started writing down the reactions and discovered over a few weeks that every time I had something containing onions that I suffered from acute stomach pains.

So, this is helpful to me because it helped me to identify the problem and so I could eliminate onions from my diet, and soon as I dared say I had no more pains. And now many years on I’ve tried to introduce a few onions into my diet and I’m fine are if I overeat onions of the pains come back but now I can have a small number of onions and there’s no pain so writing things down and even documenting on how that food reacts with you can be really helpful to you.

Track what you Are drinking

It’s easy when you’re thirsty to just grab the nearest thing and drink it and think that your thirst will be satisfied sometimes we may be drinking value-less beverages which are actually a waste of time and actually could be making our bodies set.

For example, carbonated drinks research shows that they can actually leach calcium from our bones.

I’m sure in very small amounts carbonated drinks would be quite harmless but if you are regularly drinking it throughout the day and you have a significant amount are you actually might be this might be detrimental to your bone health. Particularly if you have osteoporosis in your family and if your woman is you may be likely to get it so you want to stay away from carbonated drinks or anything else that actually may be detrimental to your bone health.

Carbonated drinks are heavy with sugar or contain chemical sweeteners that are known to create cancer in rats – not good!

Low self-esteem and bad eating habits

When what you consume controls you, rather you are controlling it, you have a big problem on your hands. Being not in control lowers your self-esteem.

Self-esteem is where you respect yourself to the point that you esteem yourself enough to look after your mind body and spirit.

When what you eat and drink controls you- you can lose your confidence, self-worth, and then you just start eating any old thing even if it makes you sick. I know I’ve been there, and I am sure you have as well.

A Few Tips to Help

Self-esteem has got a lot to do with a variety of eating disorders. I remember when I was in my late teenage years, I had a bad relationship with food. I was actually frightened to eat because I didn’t want weight gain.

 It took me several years to recover, and I had to teach myself to enjoy food. And then later into adulthood had an abusive marriage and my husband was gaslighting me, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.

My husband would comment on how I looked, my confidence remained low, so I became anorexic for many years once again.  

Food is fuel for your mind and your body and without it, you will die, and without it, you will get sick.

Understanding Wellness

To understand what wellness is, we are needed to understand our minds our bodies in relationship to food and whatever we consume.

If you have an unhealthy diet by consuming loads of takeaways and carbonated drinks, and other foods that have no nutritional value, you going to be unwell.

For example, MSG is a chemical that is in most takeaway foods and for some people, it causes swelling of the joints and pains in the legs. You may be treated for those symptoms and may be diagnosed with something else but try it if you remove MSG from your diet, you may find that swelling of your joints and pains in your legs may go.

MSG is in most Chinese food and I remember when living in Australia I ate a lot of our Chinese food and began to develop terrible pains in my legs. I discovered the truth of MSG and what it actually does to people, so I removed MSG from my diet – and bingo – the pains stopped.

And now when I have Chinese food I tell them I don’t want any MSG in it. MSG is an emulsifier enhancing the color of the food to make it look more attractive. That’s why Chinese food is beautifully bright colored and it in most frozen foods, takeaway foods and lots of snacks contain MSG. Please read the labels before you but, see if there is MSG present.

Make Nutrition Fun

I found that the best way to approach your nutritional needs is to make it a hobby – make it fun. I make it a prayerful activity as well. I pray over the food as I am preparing it and give thanks to God for supplying me with enough food to keep me healthy.

This also helps me to be conscious that I am the temple of the Holy Spirit and I have a big responsibility towards my health, ensuring that I put good food into my body.

 You can make it fun by writing what you eat down, researching it by talking about your nutrition to friends. read books and make it a bit of a hobby, and a bit of a challenge by writing down your goals and the steps towards reaching those nutritional goals.

 In this way, it won’t be a chore but a pleasure. Your newfound hobby will become a good habit. Healthy habits maintain and keep your body well – because you are worth it!

It never ceases to amaze me how people look after the houses and their vehicles and never think to look after their health.  They spend hundreds of pounds on their pet’s health and grooming but do not spend one penny on their own health. Many people spend time tending their gardens, decorating their houses, learning new skills, climbing the corporate ladder, but they won’t pay any mind at all to their health or wellness.

Until that is that they become unwell and then suddenly their interest is sparked. But I always say prevention is better than cure. It is best to make health and wellness a hobby, make it a fun thing to do while you are healthy so can maintain your health into older age.

Supplements

The human body possesses an innate ability to heal. But that process can be strengthened and sometimes accelerated in a safe and healthy way, with the use of natural supplements (Not Chemically Derived).

Prevention is better than cure – right?

Well – Yes of course- that’s why natural supplements are also used to prevent potential health problems before they develop. For pharmaceutical alternatives, use quality, natural supplements in a preventative way. When you take natural supplements, you will get a better result than if you take lab-processed, chemical supplements.

So, with natural supplements, it’s about prevention and support. It’s also about having the right information, and only taking natural supplements that are proven, trusted, safe.

Wellness and Spiritually

Like it or not, if you’re over 50, your body isn’t the same as it was when you were a 20-year-old one, so you need exercise now more than ever. I exercise daily and really feel it if I miss a day.

I exercise for 60mins each morning before I start my day. I find this sets my mind to success, health and improves my mobility. I have arthritis throughout my body now,  and moving like this first thing helps me be more active during the day. Exercise in the morning removes all stiffness from lying in bed.

As you know, and I know- you can’t do the same things, at the same pace as you once did. This, of course, is understandable and very natural. Grumbling and complaining is not the way to approach it. But embracing your age and is and finding new ways to improve your mobility is.

You may not want to hear this, but exercise is key to your independence and good quality of life as you age.

If you are a Christian, serving God will be important to you. So, if you are well, serving God is more doable. You will have more energy to help and love others in the name of Christ. Regular exercise will help to maintain your wellness.

For many people, this is no problem as they enjoy exercise. However, many others have not had the experience of incorporating exercise into their daily routine. Therefore, don’t give up hope if you are not in the habit of exercising because you can change this by developing new well-habits.

If you don’t move it- you will lose it! Our bodies were created to lift things and move. Our muscles are like rubber bands; if they are stretched, they remain healthy and flexible.

However, if they are not stretched, they can contract and shorten. Muscles that have contracted are stiff, stiff muscles are painful muscles, painful muscles that are not used become weak. Muscles are created to support your bones and keep them safe. Weak muscles cannot support bones, so the bones become vulnerable to knocks and falls. So, exercise is so essential when at any age.

The Secret

The secret to fostering the habit of exercise to improve your mobility is to find an exercise you love doing because you’re more likely to stick with something that you enjoy and look forward to doing.

You must build up your exercise steadily. If you push yourself too hard, to begin with, you can cause injury or unnecessary pain. If you hurt yourself, you will probably give on the idea of exercise, and your mobility may decline.

Get started at home with a 10min workout that you can find anywhere on YouTube for free. Or exercise with friends or groups for support and encouragement.

Put it in Your Planner.

To create the habit of exercise, plan exercise into your diary to always make time for it. If you don’t plan for it, the likelihood is that it wone get done.

Setting targets or goals will help to motivate you to get off the couch and do your 10 ins experience routine. Do you want to lose weight? Get fitter? Improve your mobility? Make a goal and ensure you move toward that. Celebrate when you reach that goal – Great Job!

Particularly if you’re over 50, For obvious reasons, it’s wise to speak to your doctor before doing any new exercise.

The Church and the Mindfulness question

Over the years, I have worked with many people who really struggle to make self-care a priority or do not know how to start caring for their mental health. So, I tried to find easy ways to help them on their journey. So, I began to research, which led me to the principles of mindfulness.

So I began to practice mindfulness, and in finding its great benefits, I became intensely interested in mindfulness issues around mental health. One thing that puts people off earning about themselves is that it seems far too complicated. So I searched for ways to make it easy and relatable to most people.

I escaped a very abusive marriage many years back, which caused me to be emotionally and physically ill. I developed bodily weakness and became susceptible to the flu. The abuse became a lifestyle- every day was the same. I tried to leave, but many complications prevented me.

However, finally, I did leave the relationship, which took a lot of courage. I began seriously fearing for my safety when my spouse abused me, and I was admitted to the hospital for several days. Living with this man wreaked havoc with my mind and immune system, making me feel like an old lady. Not only within my body but in my mind as well. After we separated and began to live alone. I spent over a year with women’s aid to receive weekly counseling. However, I was still working full time, and my colleagues nor my family knew the gravity of my situation.

For my continued safety and wellbeing, I moved away from my spouse to the other side of the city. On moving day, I had some help from friends, then the time came for them to return to their homes. By this time, it was by late afternoon. I was alone, but I wanted to move my microwave from one bench to another, where the accident occurred. Unfortunately, the microwave oven was cumbersome. I am a petite woman, and I barely could reach the bench height, so I decided to stand on a low table (I am only 4ft 11ins) to move the microwave from one place to another.

Lifting the oven while balancing on the table proved far too heavy for me, toppling me over. As I placed the microwave in place, down, I fell, landing with a sickening ‘thud’, on my right shoulder as I slammed into the hard kitchen floor. I was in great pain and taken to hospital by a friend I called upon. The doctor reported that I had ripped my shoulder, and two of the main tendons snapped. Unfortunately, I lost the use of my arm for over three months, and because I could no longer drive, I also took sick leave from work for that time.

During this time, my divorce went through, and living alone, I was trying to manage one-handed, which was not easy. I prayed and cried and repeated that – a lot! I knew that if I didn’t have a strategy, I feared becoming an invalid and, consequently, being forced to take early retirement.

I became so weak I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. I had physically slowed down because I lost the use of my arm and really didn’t feel well most of the time. To top it all off, I was grieving for my marriage that once held so much promise of love and happiness. However, my brain was still in work mode; it had not slowed me down, I wanted to recover and get back to my usual self as quickly as possible, so I surfed the web, bought books, studied the mind, and its working, and discovered mindfulness.

I wanted to become more self-aware, and like you, I have experienced stresses, joys, and much sorrow. I am also very dyslexic, so I shied away from anything to do with writing or public speaking as much I could. Through the years, I tried journaling but never was consistent with it. Due to my dyslexia, writing caused me GREAT anxiety. So, I routinely abandoned my efforts only after a few weeks.

Then I discovered mindfulness. I have enjoyed practicing holistic living all my life, which means caring for my mind, body, and soul in equal parts. However, I never really ventured into the mindfulness territory. I didn’t know much about it or understand what it was and why I should learn about it.

Thinking about it, I never connected mindfulness with God or my lifestyle or even the health of my mind, body, or soul. The opinions of my ministry friends did not help, warning me against it because it was of the devil. I think this idea is because of the fundamentalist doctrine that anything of the mind has its origins in evil.

This prevailing attitude caused me to write a new book, which I am currently working on. I found significant Biblical evidence to support mindfulness that I had to address the issue and share the theological view of mindfulness.

In my book, I will share what I have discovered about mindfulness within Biblical narratives. The word ‘ mindfulness’ is not found in the Bible, but the principles are. Mindfulness is a modern interpretation of the process, as ancient as creation itself.


I began practicing mindfulness and approached everything I did intentionally. I found that for me, mindfulness worked well if I made it a ‘lifestyle’ rather than as a practice where one dips in and out. Then, of course, I would forget to be mindful through practice, but become a lifestyle, and soon would become a well-habit and second nature.

To create a mindful life, I knew I must become familiar with mindfulness and learn all that I could. I came to understand that if I studied the theories of mindfulness, I would understand it, then slowly, I would become more mindful a little bit more every day.

So what next? What does God want?- Reflections for Lent

Here in the UK, we have had winter, where the days are dark and short, and downright depressing at times. As we are moving into the New Year, thankfully, now the days are getting a bit longer, and we no longer are under Coronavirus strict restrictions. It’s so lovely and oddly strange to be free at last and have the power to choose how we do things. I think it will take a while for our newfound freedom to play out, but we move forward together toward relative normality.

Here we are at the start of Lent and this is where we can ask ourselves the question- So what next?

We’ve been locked down forever disrupting our lives in every way. One thing I know is next for us, is that God wants us to build His Kingdom here through us, and not our selfish empires. It’s so easy to lose focus when everything else is going on around us. Through the pandemic, God taught us forgiveness, patience, love, and kindness, yet our focus can be taken away from Jesus by all that goes on.

 Another question we can ask is- what does God want?

We can discuss these questions with our family and Church. We have had two years of stopping and restarting and pausing and not knowing what will come next. But one thing has remained constant. God’s love never fails, His mercy and love endure forever, He is good, and He will never leave us.

So, as we press into the new year, maybe God is stirring up new things within us, so in that stirring, one more question needs consideration – If not now, ‘when’ do we decide what’s next, and what does God want, and how and when do we apply it to our lives and our Church?

Let us not put off seeking His precious face each day. Let us not put off taking the steps that lead us closer to Him and let us remember that God gives us strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. Ephesians 1:18-20.

Lessons in Lent, Can Jesus Really Save Us?

 MATTHEW 4:1-11,   THE TEMPTATION IN THE WILDERNESS,

Evil. We must recognize that evil is a personal issue as well as a sociological one.  It wells up, not only in our neighborhoods but also in our hearts.

Is this true temptation or a rite of passage that Jesus cannot fail?  If failure is possible, does God set the bar so low that there is no danger to Jesus? 

The author of Hebrews says, “For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). 

The Christ who “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7) is subject to every human experience, from birth to death.  He experiences hunger, pain, grief, and anger.  Otherwise, the Incarnation is incomplete, and his ministry is defective.  If Jesus cannot fail, his temptation is less than our everyday experience.  

 A savior who cannot endure our everyday temptation cannot save us.

An issue for Christians today is the existence of the devil (diabolos).  Does such a being exist or is it simply a primitive myth?

Is Evil Real?

  Today we are tempted to see evil as the product of flawed social systems––poverty, racism, ignorance, etc.––and to discount the existence of the devil. 

However, “the church teaches the existence of the devil because the biblical writers…taught such an existence and instructed us that Jesus reckoned with such an existence, too – by calling the devil a HE.

The idea of temptation is in short, is a Conflict with Satan… is the underlying aspect of the temptation conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world, which is the plot of the whole Gospel of Matthew, and Jesus was no stranger to temptation…

  • Peter tempted Jesus to avoid the cross (Matthew 16:23). 
  • Jesus also commends the disciples for standing by him in his trials (Luke 22:28). 
  • At Gethsemane, Jesus struggled with temptation once again (Luke 22:42-44).

Jesus in all aspects fulfilled the Old convent with the new. In fact, Jesus’ temptations were the very temptations––and in the same order––experienced by the Israelites in the wilderness after the exodus. Israel was led to its testing by God, just as Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness. 

Jesus Identifies with Israel

Jesus experienced baptism & temptation which paralleled the experience of Israel, whose baptism in the Red Sea was followed by their temptation in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1-13).  

Israel failed the many tests, going after other gods and reaping bitter fruit.  God punished them but did not abandon them.  Punishment was intended to redeem instead of to destroy.

Let’s briefly look at this parallel.

• The Israelite’s first temptation had to do with hunger––about which they complained bitterly––and which need was satisfied by God’s provision of manna (Exodus 16). 

• Their second temptation had to do with testing God at Massah with complaints about water (Exodus 17:2). 

• Their third temptation was to fall down and worship a golden calf at the base of a high mountain (Exodus 32)––a high mountain also being the site of Jesus’ third temptation.

But there is Another Parallel—

There is certainly a parallel between Jesus’ baptism and his temptation:

“It is no coincidence that Jesus’ temptation immediately follows his baptism.  Many of God’s people have had similar experiences. 

Right after conversion or some other significant spiritual event, precisely when a certain level of victory or maturity seems to have been attained, temptations resume more strongly than ever -Elijah in 1 Kgs 19:1-18 and Paul in Rom 7:14-25.

• And we see In all three Synoptic Gospels, the temptation immediately follows Jesus’ baptism. 

• Both baptism and temptation take place in the wilderness. 

• The Spirit that descended upon Jesus at his baptism now leads him into the wilderness.

• At baptism, God announced Jesus’ sonship, a relationship that the tempter uses in the temptation––”If you are the Son of God….” 

• At his baptism, Jesus was faithful despite John’s protest of not being worthy to baptize him. 

  • At his temptation, he is faithful despite the tempter’s best (or worst) efforts.

Let’s Now Look at the Temptations Themselves

  1. Idenity & hungerIf you are the Son of God” (v. 3a).  Following the baptism, a voice from heaven announced, “This is my Son.”  Now the devil says, “If you are the Son of God”––introducing doubt––challenging Jesus to prove the authenticity of his identity. 

command that these stones become bread (v. 3b).  The devil attacks Jesus at his weakest point––his compelling physical hunger.  Such hunger drains us, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually. 

2. Temptation of Proving who he is-“Then the devil took him into the holy city.  He placed him on the pinnacle (pterygion) of the temple” (v. 5).  We are not certain where this pterygion is located, but the temple is 100 cubits (150 feet or 46 meters) high––the height of a modern 15-story building.  “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down

“Again it is written, ‘Do not test the Lord your God (v. 7). 

Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16, giving one scripture precedence over another.  No one, not even Jesus, has the right to put God to the test.  Such testing is evidence, not of faith, but of doubt.  To test God is to put us in the driver’s seat and to require God to follow our lead. 

3. Temptation of pride & greed “Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain” (v. 8a). Again, we are reminded of Moses, who met God on a high mountain. 

On this high mountain, Jesus confronts the devil.  Jesus has come to save the world, and the devil offers him the world.  and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory” “for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you.’ and, ‘On their hands, they will bear you up, so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone” (v. 6b). 

The devil quotes from Psalm 91:11-12, verses that reassure the person “who dwells in the secret place of the Highest” (Psalm 91:1) of God’s help in adversity. 

4. Temptation of false worship for reward “I will give you all of these things if you will fall down and worship me“(v. 9). The devil names an attractive price.  “Jesus is not asked to spend his whole life at the devil’s feet.  He is given a real bargain:  one momentary bow––the verb is aorist, suggesting one single act”

But “the devil’s offer of all the kingdoms of the world is a parody in that God has already promised the messianic king, the Son of God, ‘Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession‘ (Ps 2:8; cf. Ps 73:8; Rev 11:15).

The devil’s offer would seem to be an attractive proposition, because even the New Testament acknowledges the devil’s power, calling him “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 16:11) and “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) and “world’s rulers of the darkness of this age” (Ephesians 6:12). 

So, What has Temptation got to do With us Today?

Temptation has not lost its power but is still an active force today.  “If God is calling and empowering you to do something for him (John 3:16-17), you can expect to be tested…, and you can expect testing proportionate with the seriousness of your call….  Nevertheless, testing is for our good; when biblical heroes had matured through the time of testing, they knew the depth of God’s grace that had sustained them”.

 How to Resist Temptation

Jesus resists temptation with the use of scripture, as Jesus does here, Satan uses scripture but twists it out of context- so to protect ourselves, we must know the Bible and basic Christian doctrine. 

We must have our answer ready because the tempter will not give us time to look it up or to seek advice.  The tempter is a master of timing and insists that we make our decision now.  As the Scouts say, “Be Prepared!”

 Good or Evil, You Choose!

God allows the beloved to choose good or evil and hopes to bless the right choice– To tempt is to hope for failure; to test is to hope for success. 

IMPORTANT, however, that the Spirit does not tempt Jesus, but only leads him into the wilderness––goes with him into the wilderness––reminiscent of the 23rd Psalm, where God goes with us through the valley of the shadow of death.  The Spirit leads Jesus––accompanies Jesus.  The tempting is the devil’s business.

Very shortly, Jesus will teach us to pray, “And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13).  “To be tempted (peirasthenai––from peirazo) by the devil (v. 1b).  so here in the Lord’s Prayer The word peirazo can mean tempt or test

So, as we enter into Lent, let us be aware of what we are dealing with & deal with it in the way Jesus did…

  • To tempt is to entice a person to do what is wrong.
  • To test, is to give a person the opportunity to choose what is right.

Let us choose what is right.
